POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
I started writing during the Great Recession. That time turned into a hidden blessing. After becoming re-employed, I kept writing. My themes are always inspirational, colors, love, desert or Christian.
July 11th, 1991
Time, as I felt it, stopped
As the Sun gave up its power and waned
But for an interval. I was lost –
Called away from the mundane.
Given like a vision from God –
I was shown one of absence
Contrary to a comfortable thought
But at the mercy of physics.
I am One with the Stars and Earth
And all Things of eternity;
That doubt of universal birth
Was overshadowed by gray reverie.
As the Sun gave up its power and waned
But for an interval. I was lost –
Called away from the mundane.
Given like a vision from God –
I was shown one of absence
Contrary to a comfortable thought
But at the mercy of physics.
I am One with the Stars and Earth
And all Things of eternity;
That doubt of universal birth
Was overshadowed by gray reverie.

Come, graceful brittlebush
Come, graceful brittlebush
And creamy globe mallow blooms.
The winds of spring call you
Again from the sandy tombs.
Come, you dashing lupine
And join the wingnuts on the hills.
Go and place your annual stake
With them near the trails.
There is room, woolly daisies
And Engelmann's cacti, on the plain.
Come dressed in your best trimmings.
You are favored by the sun.
I will swing by and count you
Among my treasured finds.
Fill my life with flowers
So I know that I'm alive.
And creamy globe mallow blooms.
The winds of spring call you
Again from the sandy tombs.
Come, you dashing lupine
And join the wingnuts on the hills.
Go and place your annual stake
With them near the trails.

Midnight
Seizuring so as if escaping from fright
You awoke suddenly around midnight
Then rolled over, meeting my body halfway
By habit, drew nearer and kissed me straight away.
Your cheek, always soft, nestled against mine.
Your wandering hand came to rest upon my thigh.
In my ear, your breath came like wind rushing.
By the touch of your tepid skin, I sensed flushing.
My eyes perused you in the moonlight
Convincing me for a moment that all was right.
You fell again to sleep peacefully it seemed
Perhaps to dream that time a pleasant dream.

An inhospitable truth I have
An inhospitable truth I have
To carry throughout my life
That must stay buried in my heart –
What a terrible truth!
It dances on my tongue
When I feel somebody knows.
On the scale of history – it nags;
On a bone – it gnaws.
It’s the shadow that follows
My genetic path incurably.
It will follow me into death
And be the Ghost beside me.
To carry throughout my life
That must stay buried in my heart –
What a terrible truth!
It dances on my tongue

Gentle Earth, I beg of you –
Gentle Earth, I beg of you –
Whisper to us the first sign of spring.
Annul this wintry despair
And a season of life anew, bring.
From the depths of Baja
Carry the warmth in upon a draft.
Poke the sunshine through grumbly clouds
And send it down as a gilded shaft.
Clothe the desert with the raiment
Of fleeting sheets of white rain.
Implore the wildflowers that they
Bestow upon us a fantastic display.
Help the button-face of the brittlebush
Peep over the dead, crumpled brush.
Bring forth the canyon penstemon.

Every day is a new adventure
Every day is a new adventure
A new iota, a new gnosis –
Search not by the easy standard
But see through the eyes of genesis.
The more I learn, the more I love
What man before me has done.
It catapults my soul aloft –
I yearn for that higher plane.
Push back those old perimeters.
Notch in my brain a new wrinkle.
I forge pathways never traversed
And find my world bigger still.
A new iota, a new gnosis –
Search not by the easy standard
But see through the eyes of genesis.
The more I learn, the more I love
What man before me has done.
It catapults my soul aloft –
I yearn for that higher plane.

So that you shall be blessed
So that you shall be blessed
I pray more than you are aware
For you because you are
A friend of many friends.
May age not break your stride.
Remember all of your days
And on your tongue have praise
For those on whom you relied.
May God look down and see
You at play like a child
And like a parent smile
When their child shrieks in glee.
I pray that the crazy ways
Of this revolving world
Neither make you deterred
Nor dim the light in your eyes.
I pray more than you are aware
For you because you are
A friend of many friends.
May age not break your stride.

On waves of midnight blue –
On waves of midnight blue –
We shoved off in the boat –
It mattered not where to –
Anywhere at a casual knot.
We entered a world of darkness
None but us could see –
One of two black firmaments
Distinguished by a cool breeze
And then, cradled by whitecaps –
We kissed – you kept me warm.
That the hour was so late
Was inconsequential.
We shoved off in the boat –
It mattered not where to –
Anywhere at a casual knot.
We entered a world of darkness
None but us could see –

What a curtain Bisbee has
What a curtain Bisbee has
That keeps Mexico subdued
And influences the lands
From which the Sierra was hewn.
What purple folds keep Oaxaca
As a fortress in the sky
Breaking only in Panama
To let a vessel dredge by.
No courier have I on hand
Except the initial breezes that blow
So a whisper I channel into it:
Give to Colombia my hello.
That keeps Mexico subdued
And influences the lands
From which the Sierra was hewn.
What purple folds keep Oaxaca
As a fortress in the sky
Breaking only in Panama
To let a vessel dredge by.
No courier have I on hand
Except the initial breezes that blow
So a whisper I channel into it:
Give to Colombia my hello.

To a stranger who has died -
To a stranger who has died -
Money is nontransferable;
That the Egyptians tried -
The kings - they're unconsolable
But I know some things that follow:
A reputation that's admirable;
Fame - too - worth much in gold
As well as a pretty caricature.
Others will take their talents
And I - by history’s sieve -
Will take - cheating prognosis -
My poems with me when I leave.

Thy being's grace
Thy being's grace
Is pleasant to behold -
As beautiful as
The jacaranda
When its blooms
On some April day unfold.
Blessed be the one
Who keeps thy aura.
Is pleasant to behold -
As beautiful as
The jacaranda
When its blooms
On some April day unfold.
Blessed be the one
Who keeps thy aura.

Many-hued pubs bid me welcome
Many-hued pubs bid me welcome
As would friends on the street
And so does Cromwell Bridge
Where long ago we first met.
I see the fields where we played
And plucked up the kerry violets.
I gaze out over the dark bay
Reflecting our lives as glass.
Memories live but a season
And like a photograph
And erelong, I will be as one
Fading - crumbling fast.
When you are old and banjaxed
Will you still remember
And find there my countenance
Among the leas of Kenmare?
As would friends on the street
And so does Cromwell Bridge
Where long ago we first met.
I see the fields where we played
And plucked up the kerry violets.
I gaze out over the dark bay
Reflecting our lives as glass.
