If you can take really dark material, I recommend The Devil All the Time by Donald Ray Pollock. It’s now a Netflix film starring Robert Pattinson, but I haven’t seen that. The book is the best crime novel I’ve read in many a moon, really getting to the root of subjects like PTSD in veterans, religious hypocrisy, sexual abuse, poverty, and serial murder.
