Poetry Contest Description
Haiku for the 1st of March
Pay homage to Saint David, the patron Saint of Wales, with a Haiku for the 1st of March.
Saint David, a 6th Century bishop. His most renowned miracle is raising the ground beneath him while preaching to make a hill so that the large crowd could all see him. His emblem is a white dove, and his symbol is a leek. He is thought to be associated with corpse candles: lights that would warn of an imminent death, so that those in the land of Saint David could better prepare and be forewarned of their death.
His last words have led to the Welsh phrase "Gwnewch y pethau bychain mewn bywyd" "Do ye the little things in life".
May your little entry earn great renown and bring much joy. Good Luck.

He took a molehill
and made a mountain of it
arise, saint David
and made a mountain of it
arise, saint David

harvest the lamb's will
your forefathers' blessings kept

stained by unquencehed tears
cupped hands protect the sacrifice

I put leeks in soup;
Now, I'll think of Saint David
with each bite I take.

Thanks Madame, Craic, and Lobode for the entries so far. I like the religious earthy theme going on here!

Doves coo in grand firs,
feathers gilded in heaven
to illume coal hearts.

Welsh Warnings
A light flickered
penetrating the darkness
Davids shoulder tap
we looked around
bewildered by the choices
anxious in prayer

Thanks everyone for entering. I had a rather hard time choosing a winner as each piece has superb merits:
Lobode's 1st piece also came with a welsh translation, so points for effort and extra mile there.
Lepperochan's was straight to the point with a slight tongue in cheek tone: all you need to know and entertaining.
Lobode's 2nd and 3rd piece conveyed a style and sense of religious veneration and importance.
MadameLavender's piece was a pleasant connection between the past saint and the modern legacy.
Taurek presented a piece worthy of being any haiku biography.
Quill-in-heart's piece seemed to follow the classic haiku style by incorporating nature.
Mikimoondancer's piece gave a rare show of story and two for one deal.
And Jade-Pandora covered all the points with an epic style haiku entry, to surely make the Welsh proud.
And so, the trophy goes to Quill-in-heart, with honourable mentions for Taurek and Jade-Pandora and I thank you all for entering such magnificent pieces.
