     Bessie

She told me Her name was Bess:
I caught Her first
in corners of my eye
with quick flash down the steps
to a star
like balls of light
till finally caught
resting
In Her wedding dress

It was then She spoke Her name
part of the country
happy in my home

She was waiting for Her Love
carried off
to civil war
with his picture in hand
she cries and moans
only thing of value
held close
upon rocking chair
tin-type and threadbare

When dripped my eyes
She shared Her way
to a world gone cold

In a harsh heart of winter
came news
this of mortal wounds
and donned Her treasured dress
lying in crumpled mess
She and Her tears
froze within corner
holding onto loss
in sound of breaking evening

No will to start the fire
No hope which to guide Her
Only paths to Her Beloved

Some way She remained
never finding the way
till slowly She glowed
playing tricks
in place of misery
hiding keys and things
placing them in odd sort
on middle of tables
the smile You'd feel laughter to hear

Sometimes She'd warn
sing to the Sun
carry on carry on

Eventually
calm came to peace
where She knew
time was to leave this place
and She said goodbye
on lips of a dream
where She stood to a path
praised by sunlight
leaving my home empty

Grace! Finally here I am.
I hate work...I have the time now to post it for I have finished the poem.
Okay, he is my submission, hope you enjoy. Great topic!

Witches & Ghosts & Halloween's Night

Summon the cries
Reveal the lies
Call the witches and ghosts
To sever the ties

They wander in street cracks
Thrive in the night sky black
Whisper to the witches and ghosts
To create a significant attack

The transparency is keen
Brooms and potions are mean
The witches and ghosts
Are most powerful on Halloween

Witches, use your brooms
Ghosts, haunt and spread doom
My friends
Clear the obstacles in my cloudy room

Vanquish the unknown
Conquer the sinful drone
I summon my resources
To force the daylight off its throne

Halloween night is a time for fright
It revives the dead under the moonlight
The witches and ghosts and goblins and zombies
My fellow creatures blow the sun away and make it night

Turn these children into their desires
They mock you, so conjure your ire
But your revenge is geared toward the non-believers
Who refuse to belief in the magic of Halloween’s pyre

Witches and ghosts cast your spells
Give freedom to adults as they create their alcoholic shells
Site the rhyme and scream the evil laughter
Allow sugar rushes to send them all to hell

For heaven is wrong
Healthiness does not belong
On Halloween night
So, witches and ghosts sing your song

***

Midnight chimes
Halloween night has finished its last rhyme
To my witches and ghosts
See you next time!

Her Ghost

"Come back to me"
She hissed, at the lost
of his memory.
As he faded from this
existence.
No potion or charm
will bring him back,
but her witchery is
persistent.

Her tears,
fall into the cauldron,
as green smoke fills
the clouded night air.
Immersed in the forest,
she boils her concoction,
whispering chants,
that only the insects
can hear.

Spirits gather in a circle,
and join her in her
reverie.
As the pulse
of the night seems to beat steadily,
like that of a metronome.
Lost in her enchantment,
on she continues to drone.

"Come Back!" she screams,
"Awake!" she cries to no avail.
She cuts her palm...
and her Satanic blood falls.
She can't take the thought,
not being able to ever call his name,
again.

The oozing liquid,
turns from green to red.
and boils over in violence.
The spirits disperse in fear,
the chant as been broken.

She alone lays on the forest
floor,
weak, hungry, that was her last
drop of blood.
She hasn't fed in days,
and any site of a human
is miles away.

She smiles,
as the clouds close in over her
jade eyes.
If he won't back for her,
she'll leave for him.
With the last of her strength,
she rose up and drank,
her own poisonous elixir,
and fell back,
as her mind went blank.

She didn't feel a thing,
as her hands turned to ice,
as her body decay so slowly.
As the first dawn light hit
the fog covered ground,
a hand reached for hers.
and her essence separated from the
beautiful corpse,
she was finally with him,
now and,
forever.

My Ghost Lover

Every night as I stroll in a nearby park
I always see this lady – pretty as skylark
Her hair was long, black as the night—
Shimmering silver, accentuated by moonlight
Rumor was: she’s the nymph in the forest
If you fall in love with her, she’ll take your soul

Her beauty has captured my lonely soul
I never miss my nightly stroll in the park
Especially when one full moon of a night
I heard her lovely voice, tuneful as a skylark
Her voluptuous body reflected by moonlight
Adorned the façade of the silent, dark forest

We became lovers and daily part of the forest
Never wanting to miss each other every night
Even when it’s pitch black, without moonlight
Her lovely voice would guide me from the park
Until I reach our haven—comforting my soul
Then would cease, as if resting like a skylark

What a fairytale! I was smitten by a skylark
For it was one with the nymph of the forest
Such revelation, languished my restless soul
Can’t eat nor drink every single night
Even the silhouette bathing in the moonlight
Can pleasure not the lonely sight in the park

People walking and jogging daily in the park
Took a good notice of my poor, and lonely soul
And the absence of the lovely, singing skylark
Thinking it was consumed by fire in the forest
That happened when lightning struck one night
Witnessed by not a single soul, but the moonlight

I’ve been always fascinated with the moonlight
Casting shadows that dance in the night…
Keeping everything alive within the forest
Now that the trees are gone, so is my skylark,
As I continue my daily stroll in the park
Hoping someday, it reunites with my waiting soul

Restless souls we are, dancing under the moonlight
A lovely apparition in the nude, but brightly-lit forest
Turned out my lover was that lady, raped and killed in the park!

First Date

She said she wanted to cut me open, eating everything she saw
Wear what's left as a suit, and make a hood ornament from my jaw
I said this was fun but I'd best be on my way
First dates can be scary in the strangest kind of way

As I turned for the door she let out an awful laugh
"Not so fast pretty boy, we have to feed my cats!"
"I'm more a dog person you see, and have this nagging allergy.
So if its all the same to you, I have some place I have to be."

I went to turn the knob, and flee from miss macabre
But a ghostly grip grabbed my balls and I squealed "Oh my God!"
"There's no God here" just me and you my dear.
"Now cut the shit, because I'm a witch and I can smell your fear."

Now I'd like to say that it went my way
and I skipped off without a scratch
but the reality is, I'm telling you this
from the belly of her cats.

Fishing for Spirits

Labor Day week 5 years back
the weather clear and warm
first night new home in Galveston
site of that deadly 1900 storm

My brother and his wife staying over
me and him going fishing at first light
while she drives into Houston to work
so we all hit the bunks early that night

I settled into the bedroom up front
letting them enjoy the sleeping porch this time
finally drifting off dreaming of reds and trout
dancing on the end of my tight line

Early in the predawn hour
still dreaming not fully awake
I felt a hand on my uncovered foot
as it gave me a 'get up' shake

I laid there grunting my go away
wasn't ready for my fishing dream to end
let me catch one more waiting for the coffee to make
then that hand grabbed my knee and shook hard again

Ok, ok I said I'm getting up
stumbling to the bathroom in the hall
then later standing in the doorway
It was funny I didn't smell coffee perking at all

I walked quietly to the sleeping porch
expecting to see a hint of sunrise
instead my brother and his wife were snoozing away
the moon and stars still bright in the night sky

I hurried back to my bedroom
found my phone, 3am glowed on the dial
I grabbed my pillow and blanket
thinking maybe I'd sleep in the boat for awhile

Since that first night I've had 3 others on 3 separate occasions see a young lady in her late teens or early twenties dressed antebellum style float through the sleeping porch and then silently disappear.....sadly in 2008 hurricane Ike destroyed the house, leaving nothing but the slab. I hope my lovely spirit has found a new home.
