Poetry Contest Description
Write a poem about how destructive the weather can be--hurricanes, blizzards, tornadoes, floods, etc.
I'm back in the classroom, teaching, until mid-October, so not a lot of time for me to write, so I'll host a comp for now. Write a poem about the weather, a storm, how intense it can be at times, the devastation it can cause, etc.
Any number of entries, no collabs, any style, length. Have fun!

I don't have any about destruction caused by bad weather, but I have one where I enjoy bad weather...
"One Hour Rain Shower"
One morning before I went to bed -
During the time when the day is tinted blue,
I thought I heard little shrieks
Like little scraps of televised snow
coming from my window -
It was rain, and it was telling me
"Shshshshsh!"
The view of my neighbor’s house
Fuzzed as the drops interrupted
The early birdy show, and the
White noise it made was so soothing
I didn’t bother to close the program,
And it dripped me to sleep.

^^Works for me, and thanks for kicking it off, Matt! Anything about nasty weather is fine, be it destruction, or just about the storm in general, thunder, lightning, hail, torrential rain, whatever. :)

"O Thunder"
O thunder,
how you roar,
how your lightning friend
illuminates the streets,
how the rain that follows you
jumps to their deaths
and joins in the puddles of the fallen tears
of God or whoever,
O weather,
thank you for your kindness
and bringing the murky
drizzles of nature to me,
you know how much I love it.

An Evening with Nature
Beneath the dark sky
Here solitary I sit
Alone, in a shack
Long forgotten
Lost in the jungle
Within the eye of a storm
A roar a crash
Thunder booms
Lightning strikes
The velvet sky is ripped
By bright silver rods
The orchestra of nature
The screaming winds
Among the branches
Of swaying trees
In frenzied dance
With enraged screams
Breaking ripping branches
Beyond the hill
The wild dogs howl
In fear and anger
At the storm
The wild cats yowl
The primates scream
The roars and shrieks
Of the hurricane
Spearing the earth
With its grim strength
Uproot all that’s near
Deep screams thunders as it flew
When nature settle on its peace
cuddle weariness in slumber
Stand I in weakness trembling
Awe and wonder at nature’s tranquility
The night I spent is daylight now
Rest the world in gentle grace again
Lonely shack hidden
by broken twigs
In farewell stare
as I walk away.

Darkness Before The Storm
Doubts and paranoia swarmed the city
darker than cumulus clouds, hovering...
just waiting to be triggered
into a perfect storm!
Dark secrets: secrets within a secret
instilled in our minds
sow doubt and paranoia,
until ingrained in our hearts.
When can we get away from being sucked
into this Orwellian habit of government
treating us like mushrooms?
After being kept in the dark
for so long, and fed with bullshit--
don't we deserve to see the light?
While waiting for the perfect storm,
blood sucking leeches continue
to prey upon lust and greed
of the mighty and powerful,
singing in sync
with political whores
on the road to riches.
We don't know what tomorrow may bring
because the dark clouds are still looming
like the dark secrets, yet to be unclassified
after unauthorized leaks--clarified
Our cherished liberties are in a tip-off,
slowly losing ground to national security,
yet we are told domestic spying -
"a modest encroachment on privacy!"

There’s a Calm Before the Storm
http://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/03/01/2f/00/sy-nakamal-catamaran.jpg
Flood waters from June monsoon rains
Slowly receding, giving way to a fresh lake
The weather was inviting, so we set-off to sail
On a catamaran, one Saturday afternoon
To a nearby island resort full of wonders
Promising a night of endless fun and excitement
Halfway through the voyage, lightning struck
From nowhere it came, hitting the boat’s mast
Roaring thunder drowned our frantic call for help
On a CB radio but no answer on the receiver
As there was no signal, cell phones were useless
Fear slowly crept upon our restless minds
Full moon madness overshadowed our hearts
As I recalled a line from one of my favorite songs:
“There’s a calm before the storm”
I can’t believe it was happening to us
Instead of a romantic night under the moonlight
Darkness blanketed the angry waves tossing us around
All of a sudden a fiery object the size of a basketball
Came circling upon us from under the deep sea—
Followed with ear-piercing sounds never before heard
Deafening and creepy as it was, we fainted and collapsed
Never knew what happened afterwards…
As we woke up in the island resort, a week later

Close Encounter With Death
My fiancee and I went to see a free concert in the park on that seemingly calm and clear afternoon on June 29, 2012, where the band played songs from Creedence Clear Water Revival, such as "Have You Ever Seen The Rain" and "Tequila Sunrise." After that, we watched a movie. After the movie we decided to take a walk, and look for an ice cream parlor, as we were getting thirsty. We reached the ice cream parlor after a short walk, only to find out that it was already closed. We then decided to go home to have our own homemade margaritas instead of ice cream.
On our way home, we were surprised by the gusts of wind in-front of us, while the leaves began twirling around followed with abrupt and heavy rain. All of a sudden the surrounding became pitch black while we were passing by Germantown. It was followed by random flashes of lightning, as if we were blanketed by them. It was accompanied by the roaring thunder, as if they were rolling across the towering trees along I-270. For a moment I lost control of the steering wheel because we were swaying sideways, and the front wheels were not touching the ground at all! I tightened my left hand grip on the steering wheel while I put on the sign of the cross with my right hand and began to pray. "Lord, forgive me for I have sinned against you and my fellowmen. If it's my time to die at this unholy hour, I beg you to take my spirit. Please spare my sweetheart and protect her from any harm through Christ our Lord, Amen."
As I finished my short prayer, I regained control of the car. At the same time, I heard a frightened voice, apparently from my fiancee, frantically telling me to pull over. I switched on the car's flashing lights and kept on driving at a turtle speed because there was no way for me to pull over with cars on my right lane moving at the same speed as mine. As I reached the overpass at Clarksburg, I slowly stopped under it. The cars behind me followed suit. I felt unsafe where I temporarily parked with engine running, because on my left lane I could see big rigs rushing by. I figured out sooner or later one of them could hit somebody behind me and possibly cause a major disaster.
When the downpour of heavy rain subsided a little bit, I decided to drive again at 20 to 30 MPH trying to step down on the pedal every chance I got, until I reached another overpass. This time the left lane was open, and I was able to park on the shoulder of the road beneath the overpass. I kept on repeating my short prayer while I try to calm down my sweetheart. I advised her not to touch any metal part of the car, so she won't get electrocuted just in case we got hit by lightning. As we sat still trying to weather the storm, the lyrics - "There's a calm before the storm..." from the song "Have You Ever Seen The Rain," which was sung earlier by the band in the park, played back in my mind. Meanwhile, flashing lightning seemed to hit us from all directions followed by roaring thunder which occured in cadence with the music. That's how it played in my ears anyway. We stayed here until the raging thunderstorm slowly weakened, as it moved away from us.
I decided to take advantage of the situation, and slowly but surely drove safely back home. When we finally got home, I thanked God for hearing my prayers. I believed that during our entire ordeal God is with us because I felt no fear at all. I knew God works in so many mysterious ways; whatever He plans for me and my love, I would gladly accept my role.
The next day I read the Washington Post report online to find out more about what really happened the night before. Between 9:30 and 11 p.m. Friday night, one of the most destructive complexes of thunderstorms in memory swept through the entire D.C. area. Packing wind gusts of 60-80 mph, the storm produced extensive damage, downing hundreds of trees, and leaving more than 1 million area-residents without power.
Racing along at speeds over 60 mph, the bowing line of thunderstorms formed west of Chicago around 11 a.m. and by midnight approached the Atlantic ocean. It left a massive trail of destruction spanning from northern Illinois to the Delmarva Peninsula. The National Weather Service has logged well over 800 reports of damaging winds.
On Friday, a historic, record-setting heat wave covered a sprawling region from the Midwest to the Southeast. All-time high temperatures records of 109 were established in Nashville and Columbia, South, Carolina and tied in Raleigh and Charlotte which hit 105 and 104. Here in Washington, D.C., the mercury climbed to an astonishing 104 degrees (breaking the previous record set in 1874 and 2011 by two degrees), our hottest June day in 142 years of records. As this stifling air bubbled northward, clashing with the weather front draped from near Chicago to just north of D.C., thunderstorms erupted. They grew in coverage and intensity as they raced southeast, powered by the roaring upper level winds and fueled by the record-setting heat and oppressive humidity in their path.
As I finished reading this report by the Washington Post, it became crystal clear to me that we just had a harrowing night of close encounter with death that night of June 29, 2012. This is one incident I will forever remember as long as I live.

Drain Me
Lost hearts gather on the city skyline
like rumbling storm clouds, seducing
sporadic tears fall onto deserted streets,
warm tar vapour is inhaled into my lungs.
The cross fall draws pain into the stream
washing me away in you, into exhilaration,
as momentum builds volume and velocity
pulling me under. You drain me, instantly
my heart is torn from it’s cage, through
the vortex of our intoxicating fantasies.
I seek you, child
delivered into this underworld,
a labyrinth of hardened veins
beneath the foundations of reality,
silently bleeding life
into rivers of black silk.
We wade
through loaded chambers
of cast stone revolvers, that verge
into gothic catacombs, descending
upon encompassing arches.
The damp air echoes in your wake
urging me to succumb to your ways.
My mitigations overwhelmed
by the flow of mystic feelings.
The feeble eye of my flashlight
only revealing parts of you
that you want me to see.
The invisible force of the undertow
draws me deeper into uncertainty.
Our minds wary of the perils
that lurk in the smothering pitch.
The pitfalls, rodents and serpents
of want, need and absence,
consolidating our isolation
toward the outflow, into the wild seas…
I am found. My child delivers me into the light.
She raises me up and fills me, instantly
my heart is torn from the underground
with timeless wisdom, like a whispering storm.
I escape death, but it’s certain, the pain I embrace
from my regrets, will be the death of me, again.

I want to write about the storm of life if that is okay.
Storm of Life
As the Storm of Life passes me bye,
It makes me think of all of my mistakes and makes me cry.
This is the time in my life that I asked the Lord forgive me and let me join your Eternal Flock,
At this time I know my life will be stable as my foundation of life is on your Rock.
There are times in life it feels like we are going to crash like the Walls of Jericho,
But with the Lord by our side He will never let us crash or let us go.
By the Lord being in my heart it makes my heart joyfully sing.
Because of living a Life of Christ will least what the Eternal Life will bring.

(El Nino Storm-1995)
We set up second high camp
at the toe of the glacier around six,
the valley was just extravagant
at nearly six thousand meters,
the air crisp, not a cloud,
a single wisp was seen,
it was Heavenly,
a mountaineers dream,
clear weather.
Around midnight, the wind began to howl,
ice pelted the side of our small nylon tent,
the sides seemed like they were collapsing
as we three spooned with temperatures
dropping well below zero.
The air turned frigid,
our faces felt brittle,
snot froze to our beards.
We could hear rocks falling
out on the ridgeline,
it was freaking scary.
No one wanted to be a hero,
so we aborted the summit push
because of the white out,
visibility was less than ten feet,
it would have been suicide.
It lasted like that for these days,
but we thanked God when it ended,
as the tent was rather rank,
I mean it stank.
Later, we read reports
of the freakish storm,
it came out of nowhere,
a byproduct of El Nino.
The mercury with wind chill
was recorded at
70-degrees under freezing,
and gave us sustained
hurricane-gusts.
In all the valleys
for miles around,
the corn fields
were totally destroyed,
it created a minor
economic collapse.
We were lucky, but did manage
to learn two valuable lessons-
Never underestimate
the power of the planet
and bring a weather radio,
it could save your life.

dust storm in the canyons
inverted dungeons
flirt with clouds
who's sole purpose by all accounts
is to serve as catapults
for dusted angels.
when i wasn't dodging falling angels,
i was stepping over the those who had crashed.
hop scotching over pools of ammonia and plasma
in search of a safe den.
i flick my tail and shake my coat
in the wake of the stench.
scarecrows marking asphalt rows bend and sway
in curious contortions in anticipation
of euphoric relief.
in their drunken nods they spy
my virgin veins with envy.
not yet having spilled blood in these canyons
i loop aimlessly as a scavenger.
camouflaged temptations beckon
and scar beyond my coated flesh.
swarms pollinate fields a sunset away
but flies feast on the remains of angels
and scarecrows
in this valley.
the effective butterfly.
i see the sand blowing
eyes are blinded
and turned.
stick out your tongue
is the hollow echo i hear
in this soporific tempest.
do i dare

Here's a little tune I wrote for this special occasion. I call this one:
WITHIN THE VORTEX
Ride the winds, on the back of Hell,
Lightning bolts and crucifixion nails.
Stand alone for the ferryman,
The Styx’s black water waits,
To carry away the damned.
Come alive within the hurricane,
To forge a path and leave a stain.
Break the stones on the winds,
Lost alone the vortex,
Waiting for the world’s end.
Elemental,
I’m the man of the storm.
Homicidal,
I will claim your first born.
Death cold breath upon your neck,
Leaving you in a weeping wreck.
Bundles against cutting breeze,
No more warmth within,
The Reaper takes all with ease.
I’m the presence you feel,
The calm before the storm.
The Raging God in every age,
Taking your sacrifice,
Tornadoes scream my name.
To eternity I have bared witness,
A mountain in the storm of endless bliss.
The trees, they shiver, at my caress,
Trembling at my passing,
Upon the peace, I still trespass.
Elemental,
I’m the man of the storm.
Homicidal,
I will claim your first born.
Ride the winds, on the back of Hell,
Lightning bolts and crucifixion nails.
Stand alone for the ferryman,
The Styx’s black water waits,
To carry away the damned.
Come alive within the hurricane,
To forge a path and leave a stain.
Break the stones on the winds,
Lost alone the vortex,
Waiting for the world’s end.
Elemental,
I’m the man of the storm.
Homicidal,
I will claim your first born.
Death cold breath upon your neck,
Leaving you in a weeping wreck.
Bundles against cutting breeze,
No more warmth within,
The Reaper takes all with ease.
I’m the presence you feel,
The calm before the storm.
The Raging God in every age,
Taking your sacrifice,
Tornadoes scream my name.
To eternity I have bared witness,
A mountain in the storm of endless bliss.
The trees, they shiver, at my caress,
Trembling at my passing,
Upon the peace, I still trespass.
Elemental,
I’m the man of the storm.
Homicidal,
I will claim your first born.
