The Kindness Challenge

Pouring a bucket of ice water on yourself
Swallowing a spoon of cinnamon
Walking over a pyramid of milk crates
Trying to jump over a speeding car
The more ridiculous
The more dangerous the challenge
The more views, likes and comments
I guess for some
Social media is the validation they need

Somewhere along the development of this technology
We lost the sense of human sensitivity
Of connection
Now we’re algorithms and equations
Looking for fifteen minutes of fame

Narcissim creeps in
When the ego is inflated by numbers
By artificial compliments and praises
Beauty then is only seen on the surface
And less by the character and soul

When I hear of little girls with fragile self esteems
who are hurt by internet trolls – I get mad
Or confused boys pressured into bad behaviors
by idiots hiding behind screens – I get pissed
But mostly
I get sad at how cruel this world has become

Perhaps we need the kindness challenge
Doing something nice
Something kind
Something generous everyday
Genuinely
Not posting it to social media to gain views
But doing it because it’s heartfelt

And maybe the result will be
A sense of happiness
Of enlightenment
Of accomplishment for the human race

DURESS OF A S.T.S.

ME:

A simple traffic stop by a cop
Can easily lead to a body flop
Or as one shops in a Walmart
Never again being able to fill up a cart

Standing outside the local Mart selling CD's
Could conclude with tees conveying R.I.P.'s
Don't be selling any of the Lucy cigarettes
You won't get a chance to live with regrets

I
CAN'T
BREATHE

Police:

I
CAN'T
BELIEVE

You can't see how little we value your life?
We'll kill and then say that we saw a knife
Or a gun as we kill your son at the playground
Even in open carry states, we'll still put him down

ALL
LIVES
MATTER

YOURS
JUST
SPLATTERS

Your brain matter is nourishment for dry soil
Blessing lands like laying hands with olive oil
We will toil until your souls total extermination
It may take awhile but we have determination

By our estimation, there'll be no resurrection for you
After crucifixion, BeBe's multiplication will be through
Not everyone in our crew is down for this devilish cause
Yet, there're too few in our municipal to even make us pause

ME:

I
FEEL
LOST

TOO
MUCH
LOSS

You've made me toss that Officer Friendly image
It now smells like sewage belonging in the garbage
Political verbiage to paint a positive reflection of you
And if it's BLUE LIVES MATTER, then you're all one crew

I'm tired of you taking our lives without remorse
Tired of the courts rarely providing us recourse
So I'm forced to keep writing about us dying on primetime
Cause there's nothing else I can do so that I don't lose my mind

All we have left is our voices, poets, to express what is so wrong today.  Great freedom of expression here..

No Quarter

A quarter for yo' thoughts
a nickel for yo' dreams
we've been stamped in juxtapose
can't see each others' gleam

Yet we're here all shiny new
even though so old we seem
you thought this recaptured me
from thundering the dusty plains

Eternal sits in some collection
of many safely garnered things
but even if you wanted this
more than any other gains

I retreat from ever'y wish
only this promise can glean
I won't stay imprisoned here
if my value has its falling out
like rising dust I'll leave.

Evolve

We evolve to resolve matters of the mind and heart
Otherwise we would never be able to grow
And those who won’t learn may not be so smart
They choose to stay the same or move really slow

There are those who seek knowledge to understand
Expanding their horizons they become clever and wise
Then there are some with their heads in the sand
They lack vision when they try to see with closed eyes

How the world worked over a hundred years ago
It’s not the same as what we can do now
Things have advanced and have picked up tempo
And some want to stay the same someway somehow

Each day we discover something better or new
Improving the quality of life we can have and lead
While some wish stay with things we all once knew
They see no need to flourish, believe or succeed

Some won’t accept change or won’t learn to adapt
They fear the things they don’t understand or recognize
They’re scared in the heart and their souls are trapped
Simply because they don’t know how to empathize

If we don’t learn to adjust and change with the times
The world will become strange in just a few blinks
For some will be swept by the tide not seeing the signs
And their kind will slowly become extinct

WHY SO CRABBY

From the bottom of the barrel into a hot pot
Turning up the heat when we meet's the plot
Unity rots cause we feel like we got to compete
Using our claws like Jaws' jaws leads to defeat

Grabbing a seat to eat with he that threw the net
Who's crabbing our likeness without regret
Set, match, game; it's a shame and outright lewd
Nobody wins when the family feuds

That's the attitude that needs to be infused under our shells
But we're caught up in the glitz, glamor and fame of their spells
Chasing fairytales that rarely fulfill the happily ever afters
Enjoying spoils as water boils on our sisters and brothers

SOUND DA ALARM

Let the freedom bell ring
Lift up your voice & sing
Ping the I.P.'s that you wanna address
Addressing issues causing you distress

Some are gonna press you to remain silent
Some may silence you by becoming violent
Never relent in your quest for equality
Never put down the mirrors of our reality

Display fallacies they want us to consume
Convey tragedies of whom met their doom
Destroy the brooms used to sweep the net
Utilize Zoom so people will not ever forget

It'll put a target on your back like Public Enemy
Cause the flavor that they savor is you as an effigy
Throughout history they've consistently used the steel
To kill the will of those chose to try to help us heal

The Vessel

It was then that as the battle was raging on
A strange ship appeared above in the skies
And as all eyes turned upward the fighting stopped
Long enough to be mesmerized by it’s giant sails

A soldier from the north side of no man’s land
Fired a canon round toward the massive vessel
But it seemed that the hull’s shiny chrome and steel
Absorbed the shell as it descended slowly

In fear, both sides turned their fire on the craft
A fury of hell bombarded until smoke blinded them
But still, the ship, without making a sound
Landed without damage in the battle field

One side had dispatched several planes to attack
But just as they released their missiles
Their projectiles disintegrated in midair
Turning to dust, falling on the men like snow

For the next ten months the world stopped fighting
A ceasefire was declared by all nations
As they tried to figure out who the visitors were
Or at least what their intentions would be

And the vessel did not move or open up
It just docked there in that battle field
Like some kind of threat or forewarning
Making the people of earth realize
They were not alone

Meanwhile
Scientists
Politicians
Religious leaders
Military advisers
Many came to the town that had been leveled by the fighting
Surrounded the ship
Admiring it’s design
Wondering who they were and why they were here

After several months of talks
World leaders declared peace
In hopes that the visitors
Would reveal themselves

And as treaties were signed
Humanity celebrated
The then world watched
As the vessel lifted off
Just as quiet and soft like a breeze
Higher and higher into the sky
And once in the upper levels of the atmosphere
With a flash it disappeared
Into the dark of space

MARATHON MAN

Barking dogs
Crying grand baby
Ailing wife
I'm going crazy

Vision hazy
Can't see clear
Wondering maybe
I shouldn't be here

Greener grass over there?
Seems to be that way
Should I veer as I steer?
Or take it day by day

Dealt cards I must play
Keeping a poker face
This race ain't a relay
So I must choose my pace

Strength in Numbers

Silence can sometimes mean compliance
Then those in power will try to gain more power beyond their reach
And if we don’t speak up against violence
Then what good is our freedom if we don’t exercise our free speech

Even if we are helpless in a situation
Words can carry the weight of humanity for those being oppressed
The voice of the people will be heard
Like thunder it will descend and the issues are sure to be addressed

Sometimes it just takes one person
To be the tipping point to get the masses to see and understand
A few may suffer the consequences
But you bet the multitudes will come in tidal waves to lend a hand

They may think that we are powerless
Or that they dominate us when they have screwed and skewed laws
Well it’s going to be a rude awakening
Because there’s strength in numbers when we take up the cause

VIVA LA REVOLUCION

If you tremble with indignation at every injustice
You're a comrade of mines and you can trust this
Raise your fist and spit viva la revolucion; it's time
It will not be televised because it begins in our minds

There you'll find the malicious code that's been uploaded
Exposed to subliminal viruses causing it to become eroded
Molded into views that they want for you to accept as true
So you must declare war to restore power inside your crew

Taking Ownership

All my young life I read what I was spoon fed in that little circle
And yet when I went outside that ring, thinking outside the box
The fear was that I was stepping going into dangerous ground
That somehow opening my eyes was going to be some paradox

It was then that I had to put some critical thinking skills to use
Was I lied to or just sheltered by those who only knew what they knew?
Or was their fear a way to keep subjugated to an old dogma ?
But that was slowly changing inside of me as I gradually grew

With knowledge comes power and ownership of the life we lead
We can read and study the greats to give us some inspiration
We become the prophecies and destinies we find within ourselves
Discovering our inner purpose with depth and strong foundation

It can be a challenge to remain a free thinker and writer, like swimming upstream, but it's worth it to know where you stand and to have a stand when groupthink abounds.  Whether a fictional story or tales of reality, the truth will always emerge like a watermark.  Great entries, peeps !

The Silver Forest

In the tender heart
where vulnerable peace exists
innocuous
and of silver strands
its daylight and twilight
promise sovereignty
as the forest glitters --

    Its creatures all love me.

She is the raven, the one
whom I never fear the dark
blackness of her
is within the deepest recess
of matron soul.

Paternal is not the air
           here but gone
        in fear of serpent's lair.

I am what lies and rules beneath
      and devours fear in moving
             rippling it away

I hide within her silver hair;

          the unafraid are already here.

KEEPING IT REAL (Tale of Refugees)

Keeping it real
can really feel like
you're pressing chrome steel
against your dome

History has
chronologically revealed
many details about
refugees in their own home

Without any place
to phone home to
and are very confused
as to the reason why

Because everywhere
that they try looking
there's no sign of
a ribbon in the sky
