By the way, entrants, we need you to vote in the poll as to whether to continue these competitions or not.

I can't think of any more elaborate and complex personifications of animals than Margaret Atwoods Animal Songs. There was such a subtle quality to their persistence in speaking through her, telling wild realities. I loved your entry, Slipalong with Owl Song interpretation, congrats on runner up.
I am really fascinated by The Handmaids Tale, and I love what you did with your edgy and poignant version, Wally. I have to go back and read the original poem again so I can really understand the paradox described.
Congrats on winning
I also really loved Ahavatis interpretation of Rat Song and how it related to my poem. Thanks so much for that amazing critique, it's so helpful.
Thank you to Johnny and Ahavati for hosting and critiquing :)

Lets hope our efforts to improve our writing will draw attention to this great contest, perhaps they could be highlighted in some way.
My delayed awareness of Tough Love Critique (TLC) !!! given as gold standard.
Most at this trying time, have, or are unwittingly under mental pressure and stepping out of our comfort zone and shelter.
This requires the dexterity of an Olympic athlete, and as we see some of them, are struggling with composure.

Thanks, you two! Or should I say, your Majesties, as you are both the ruling Queen/King of the Classics! We're getting some very nice messages to continue despite the "haters", as well as apologies for the lack of time to participate. But, I feel I need to clarify.
The poll has nothing to do with "haters" ( though it did provide them an opportunity to vote ). It was about the hashtags and the required number of entries to create them, which is 8. Typically we have more than enough entries to create monthly hashtags, but in this month's comp, one only had 7; thus, the hashtag will not automatically generate. Looks like I will have to write another Atwood tribute myself. Which, btw, I don't mind. She's an amazing poet.
The site is transitioning to hashtags ( Webmiss can explain more about that ); thus, anyone doing a search for a particular poet ( especially the classics and well-known moderns ) would have the option to click Deep Underground Poetry. This promotes the site even more. A lot of work goes into these comps. Webmiss takes the time to create the hashtags ( which automatically generate upon reaching the required number ), and we typically provide comprehensive critique, albeit we were a bit slack on that aspect last month.
So far we've held 40 Classic Corner comps and are well into our third year! This has introduced 40 amazing poets to the hashtag list! There are hundreds more worthy of featuring/learning about. This grows the site in a positive way via poetry. Which, I believe was the intent when developed.
Therefore, if we have enough participants to continue, we will. If not, then we may just transition them to regular competitions in honor of our "lovers"!
Thanks to all who have supported these comps over the years! xo

I want to thank our hosts Ahavati and Johnny for always holding these comps that I feel are important in expanding our knowledge of classical and contemporary poets/writers. Congratulations to PR and Slip for their honorable mentions and I am also very grateful for the honor on this comp. Being a fan of the Handmaid's Tale and the piece "Marrying the Hangman" I could help but really see the parallels with society, especially with some recent passing of laws in some states. When my wife watches the Handmaid's Tale show, I can't help but get pissed (I know it's just a show) but seeing how women are treated, and yet it felt like that's where we were headed for a time (sorry I don't mean to ramble).
Thank you again Ahavati and Johnny for the honor.

You're very welcome, Wally. We're still on the fence about the comps. I'm unsure we have enough to support the hashtags; however, I'm also sure we'll decide something by next month. Thank you for your support.

August Interlude
The warm night air sits
still and surrounds
all the ripened stalks
and fully opened flowers;
petals dangling in
a final vitality.
Heavy branches swoon
insect-laden air as lower leaves
begin a first yellowing of many
transitions to come;
hunger abated.
A ground saturated in
summer rain lingers
under plush, trampled
long, strewn grasses.
Songs of summer still
hang suspended in the air
as if exuded from molecules
of all that new life blooming,
bursting forth;
The mellow airborne honey
is inhaled and sticks in my throat;
its story enters my bloodstream
as groggy cognition.
Why does it seem like
this will last forever --
everything seems stuck,
reluctant to go past as if
it desires to remain
and be reflected in a
permanent moonglow
of Summer's signature
late in its life;
aware of its maturity,
awash in experience.

Bloody fantastic, PR. Are you going to submit this as a hashtag?! That would make the 8th. I still need to finish the draft I have!

I did add the hashtag to this, but it still says 'coming soon', so we must be short of the 8 still. I only counted seven in this comp including my latest :)
