Poetry Contest

A Tribute to Neil Peart

Today is a very sad day for music. News that Canadian musician, author and lyricist for (my all time favorite band) Rush, Neil Peart passed away January 7, 2020.

If you have read his books or listened to his lyrics in Rush's discography, you will find the epitome of musical virtuosity and profound poetry. As a drummer I always admired his style and technique. As a writer his lyrics always touched my soul.

Dear Poets, if you know him, show him some love with a tribute Rush fans all around the world would appreciate.

Min. 200, Max 500 words.
Any style, prose OK.

Questions PM me.

When we are young
Wandering the face of the Earth
Wondering what our dreams might be worth
Learning that we're only immortal
For a limited time - Neil Peart

Rewind (The Universe)

(Tribute to Neil Peart)

[v1]
I almost missed the chance
to see the rarest supermoon
They played a legendary tune
In a sky I'd never seen before
A beast in a planetary band

[chorus 1]
A tribute of the century
A signal to my ears
Rolls off the tongue then dissapears
Until the next replay
That's what they meant to me

[short drum solo]

[v2]
To the children of lyrical creation
You were an instant inspiration
A record worth every single penny
Your words are the very definition
Of eternity

[v3]
Sometimes good things break away
Never to be seen again
I won't let that lead me astray
On my journey to the stars
Your song will never end

[chorus 2]
A tribute of the century
A signal to my ears
Rolls off the tongue then dissapears
Until the next replay
That's what you meant to me

[bridge]
Please phone us from your new home
Or the nearest satellite
If you feel alone or lose your sight
Just roll onto your side
Let your fingers hit rewind

On the universe
[guitar solo]

[outro, fading]
A tribute of the century
A signal to my ears
Rolls off the tongue then dissapears
Until the next replay
That's what you meant to me

The well beaten path (Neil Peart tribute)

You know, you know, in just a second
The intro and its ring
Its reaching in, that solid underpin
The osmosis: of his arms like beating wings
He was the king of sticks and skin

Chorus
You waved your wands on golden pond
From this world to that beyond
A shake down for that great man
That thing that eats, with a smile dead pan
Decay, destroy a core
Rush's centrepiece, the guilt of shining flare
His drumsticks now bereft, of that maestro's, magic blur

Like a great ring master
That he controls the floor
And they answer willingly
As he conducts that hoard

Others have their part to play
As they stand round the edge
A lynch pin in the driving seat
The base drums lead message

Chorus

To hold that charisma
To echo that applaud
To be the solid bedrock
To crash every cymbal, just when others pause

Hard lessons learned to earn that seat
To sing and play just what you feel
The miles of gigs, and now compose your final piece
That "Rush" honed and made girls squeal

Chorus

When life's that cheat, pinch the Hi-Hat one last time
Put down the pen to rest a while
Write the last lyrics for your end game
The score of tears that pain we felt

Tribute acts will countefiet his sound, so prized
That his ghost will give them sleepless nights
Great talent feeds a "Rush" and it persists
A great loss. percussion lingers like a stolen kiss
The diaphragm's resonance long fade to revival
To be reborn again the next disciple

Chorus

Percussion

At the age of fourteen
I walked to the beat of a different drum
The path seemed so arduous
Wisdom came from a frog with a diamond ring
He said be patience my friend your day will come

Walking home with writing of Rand
I saw tractor left broken in the field
I knew I wasn’t lost but had something to sale
Disillusioned by the beat of the band
I guess it was just part of the deal

To beat the beat as part of the band
It’s the rush of it all if you understand
Had my highs and my lows
Friendships, tragedies and foes
All I ever wanted was the beat of the band

I found myself in the amidst of a rush
Wondering where to begin
A wise olé owl which flew by night
Said you’re a blank canvas, pickup your brush
The first note of a drum was heard within

Finally you find all the success
Your buddies are rich it’s a journey to see
But tragedy can bring you to your knees
Somethings are hard to confess
Look up at the vapor trails when you think of me

To beat the beat as part of the band
It’s the rush of it all if you understand
Had my highs and my lows
Friendships, tragedies and foes
All I ever wanted was the beat of the band

By Hatchet, Axe and Saw

Drum stick's splinter
words refuse to tour
temples fall silent
the meek wanted more.

Grafters in the dirty clubs
sip tea behind stage doors
left inside a dressing room
A kimono slips to the floor

The greedy oak's
have grabbed  the light,
a white feather falls
from his flight by night.
