Morning Drives
Everyday on my way to work,
I drop my fourteen year old son at school,
Now his freshman year is almost over,
Time surely flew by.
And it’s in those early morning drives,
Through whatever weather,
Or whatever the mood is
When we have our little talks.
I’m reminiscent of the conversations
I had with my father,
Thinking,
This will one day end too.
This morning’s drive I thought to myself,
Three more years and he’s off to college,
In a couple of more years I’ll have an empty nest,
I better enjoy more of these everyday moments.
He may be nearing six feet tall,
But he’s still that little chubby baby
I used to tickle and made him laugh,
He still that wide eyed boy with an infectious smile
That I deeply cherish.
Every morning on my way to work,
I prepare myself in the mindset of deadlines,
Timesheets, assignments, paperwork, budgets
(and the list can go on and on),
But there’s that one minute as he gets out of the car
He says “have a good day dad” and waits at the crosswalk,
For a few seconds I stare in my rearview mirror,
Thinking - that young man was once my little boy,
He is getting ready to go out into the world.
In that very moment I feel joy and nostalgia,
Because time is flying by.

Congratulations Missy!
A thought-provoking moment in time, indeed.
