California Love (Denise Levertov Tribute)
As you sleep you dream of California,
Always draped and encased in gold.
You always watch as the short, cold
Days of winter and its dimly lit aura
Disappears into the pale, amber light.
Will you be thinking of her? Because
Although you will take one long pause
To admire her in her glory in the night,
But what about all the other seasons?
Because you can be loving her during
All the good memories, but enduring
The fire together is not in the reasons
In which you have loved her the best.
You are thinking of her paradise, but
It comes with fragility too. You shut
Yourself off and away from the rest
Of the world, but you she will always
Holds a spot in your heart. No matter
Where you go you know the splatter
Of spring rain as the horizon’s haze
Beckons you back into her embrace.
In your soul it has always been home
Because no matter how far you roam
You come back to her and you trace
Heritage there, surviving wars, but she
Still stands there with pride. Her land
Keep surviving and your eyes will blur
With tears because despite wanting to be
Able to stay forever, you may have to
Leave her, but her love is inside of you.

Firstly, thank you to all who braved Levertov.
Jade - yours was very well done in the essence and style of Levertov's poem. Stanza 10 is a bit awkward with the word "still" used twice, but this is really a minor quibble in comparison to the effort you put into this poem. Congratulations on first place.
Poppy - Your imagery was impeccable. You possess an observatory spirit as Levertov. As Jade's, there were some repetitions, but overall it didn't distract from the essence of the piece. Congratulations on second place.
Snugglebuck - Yours resonated strongly with the inspiration in that something should not be taken for granted as being around because it may be gone the next moment. And this time around, your "subtle environmentalist stance" paid off. Congratulations on third place.
Kathy, I have to say that your entry took our breaths away; however, was a bit too structured compared to Levertov's inspirational poem and the other candidates. As far as poems go, it is exquisite and well done.
Honorable mention to Slipalong: it was a valiant effort and most improved; the best you've put forth thus far. Way to go!
If you haven't already, please be certain to vote in the poll for the upcoming classic poets of May at the following link:

April's Classic Comps, featuring Kim Addonizio and Kahlil Gibran, will be guest hosted by eswaller and snugglebuck so that Johnny and I can focus solely on NaPo! We would ask you to support them - as any poem you would write for their comps can be used as a NaPo entry as well. Hitting one bullseye with two arrows, per se.
Again, thank you all for supporting the classic competitions.

I’ve been trying to catch my breath, what with the results posted one right after the other, and on the heels of the NaPo challenge, I’m gathering my thoughts...
I was so deep into my Levertov write, It pushed me into a Yellow cab at 6th Avenue & 54th, Manhattan, and I hung on!
Good Lord, the journey we’ve been on with each chapter of the Classics Corner; we’re all showing the benefits in our writes.
We have the hard work and dedication of Ahavati and JohnnyBlaze to thank in large part for making it possible.
My humble thanks to you for granting me first place in this tribute to poet Denise Levertov. If it weren’t for being so inspired by her work, my entry would not have stood the chance of existing.
I also congratulate Poppy and Kimmy as runners-up for your splendid efforts. Does anyone of us envy what our hosts/ panel face after each tribute comp is done, to judge which lucky few garner awards of recognition?
On that note: to those who will be joining with me for April’s NaPoGloPoWriMo, it’s off to the races, see you there!
Jadey🙏🏻
p.s. To Poppy,
Thanks so much, dear sister of the Pen! I’ll meet you over there (the poem).

Greetings, Entrants!
Webmiss has implemented the hashtag #DeniseLevertov ( yes, we know her first name was Priscilla, but she hated it, so . . . ). Please edit your entry themes accordingly. And, thank you always for supporting the Classic Corner comps!
