El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz
Able to keep his cool and kill fools with his intellect
Taking them to school and making them drool like derelicts
He'll have my respect until the day my spirit hits eject
I don't expect every man to understand but please don't interject
Just let your fingers do the walking and keep scrolling to another's poem
Cause just like Malcolm the outcome will be me refusing to conform
Today is his born day, nineteen May, so I'm showing adoration
Exhibition of manhood on which he stood is my greatest inspiration
Taking them to school and making them drool like derelicts
He'll have my respect until the day my spirit hits eject
I don't expect every man to understand but please don't interject
Just let your fingers do the walking and keep scrolling to another's poem
Cause just like Malcolm the outcome will be me refusing to conform
Today is his born day, nineteen May, so I'm showing adoration
Exhibition of manhood on which he stood is my greatest inspiration

broken moon sangria
the moon was broken
the sangria was sweet
did we worry about it then?
we marched to the sound
of the drums that beat
in the hearts of lusty men!
there were battles to fight
there were women to love
and the dreams that set our course.
we would conquer the day
with the valor of heroes
and without regret or remorse.
but the road winds thru hell
and fate is a tiger
with a taste for a dour man's meat.
the mountain repelled us
and the sea overwhelmed us
we were battered and lost in defeat.
we are nomads still
in a blistering land
and the Lord our souls may keep!
but we long for the warmth
of a feathery bed
and the women who wait...
and weep.

Candle
"Out , out, brief candle!" ~ Shakespeare
Your single light burnt
a lone taper
dancing with the breeze
shadowing the trees
in your frolicking style
until
darkness won the day
turning you away
from the bright light you shed
with the red blood you bled
exacted
by your tender slender hand
Your single light burnt
a lone taper
dancing with the breeze
shadowing the trees
in your frolicking style
until
darkness won the day
turning you away
from the bright light you shed
with the red blood you bled
exacted
by your tender slender hand

Atramentous
My fate was set on the night we met
I played red and I lost the bet
I should have played black, yes I do regret
For now there is no denying that I am in your debt
With no Judgment you took me in your comfortless embrace
I knew this wasn’t love, But I had a place.
Not just a corner, but limitless breathing space
And at least here I don’t have to wear a smile on my face
Your shadows lead me to graves dug up and coffins opened
The stench of rotting flesh burns my nose, and yet no emotions are woken
For the need is no longer there to regain that which was lost
The lessons were learned and I paid the cost.
My hunger fed to satisfaction, I have no want
I am left nefarious and with the need to hunt
Prey let loose
The thrill, the chase…
The kill
At will
Supplied with blood the pen to fill
To slit the throat, Breath released…
The flesh to feast
To nurture my inner beast
Another piece of the light deceased!
The need for more makes the want seem superficial – Cosmetic!
But you imprinted on me- It’s now genetic.
Part of the unlit murky shadows and the unapologetically authentic
For black cannot be hidden- Its dark nature too majestic
Light is poetic but the dark is prophetic
And now it’s for my soul to accept it
The connection IT and I share is magnetic!
A willingly captured prisoner no longer a hostage
Shackles now jewels and addicted to the bondage
Unilluminated
Treacherously fascinated
Emotionally mutilated
And mentally rejuvenated.

Queerness
I
A friend of mine told me about
a friend of hers
who’d come to question her sexuality
while married to a man.
He pressured her into things
like group sex,
lapping at the faucet of
her sexual confusion,
little more than a dog
who doesn’t understand
where the water comes from
and doesn’t care to.
There was a happy ending.
She fell in love with a woman
and they spent their retirements together,
long into an age when infirmity
ruled out sex. Because that, said my friend,
was her friend’s epiphany,
that what she’d wanted all along
was someone she could wake up with.
II
The flowers of a soul
are sometimes choked with weeds,
sometimes starved of light and water
and sometimes drowned in them.
Many types exist, and so the garden
can’t be named for this or that flower.
A queerness comes out
in the riot of red, yellow, purple, white,
black, azalea, and more.

Delving
How far you are willing to go
how very deep
then let yourself steep
in the eternal moment
Focus on the breath
forget all about death
all about life
and its endless brass rings
Instead covet simple things
like butterfly wings
like the caterpillar
who braves her chrysalis
As she does fully confess
then does rearrange
her regal moment of change
for all the world to see
Especially you and me
while we finally exhale
release each travail
knowing now which way to turn
how very deep
then let yourself steep
in the eternal moment
Focus on the breath
forget all about death
all about life
and its endless brass rings
Instead covet simple things
like butterfly wings
like the caterpillar
who braves her chrysalis
As she does fully confess
then does rearrange
her regal moment of change
for all the world to see

while we finally exhale
release each travail
knowing now which way to turn
