Also, you should note I didn't actually take meaning from your poem. I only asked you questions about it.

Sure. I am definitely Pro enjoying how others might interpret words written by an author. But now I would ask what was your meaning behind your writing?

Well, usually as a rule, I don’t like explaining, because I feel that is the prerogative of the reader to come up with their own interpretation. But been as we are discussing on a level playing field, I’ll play ball.

This was a dark love poem. So when alluding to bones wrapped in parachutes, I was alluding to the free feeling of love. Of freedom. Of feeling like I could fly.

To say they should be called shrouds mirrors the parachute in appearance, but symbolises death. It symbolises the crushing feeling that can come from the end of a relationship. And that’s very much how I felt at the time (this was written some time ago)

So this was a very metaphorical piece. However, one I feel fits Val’s original post topic of dark imagery poetry.

The topic was never what I was concerned about. If you had said you wrote about this thinking about Rainbowdash from MLP I probably could have drawn some conclusions and understandings as well. You and I are now conversing, the forum could honestly go fuck itself about rules at this point for me.

I ask because understanding the meaning that was meant by the author of a piece can be extremely useful for comparing where my own mind went and what the writer had intended. There is only fun for -you- if you only you know what it is about and no one else does.

I wouldn't recommend telling someone what it means off the bat, of course, otherwise, we would never be able to have this enjoyable conversation and wonder why we each came to these conclusions or thoughts. As a rule, I don't explain my poems to those who haven't read them yet. That's my own personal rule though.

Do you still want me to continue with my personal opinion after this?

Of course. You are entitled to your personal opinion. That’s the beauty of discussion. So go right ahead.

Of course I am. Though on occasion I will ask if it is still wanted.

You spoke about your friend who was on the spectrum. They claimed to not be able to discern any meaning from this piece and I would suggest you not throw away that comment so lightly. Many people often look at a poem purely surface level and never dive deeper.  After all... upon my first read I felt the same.

It was only after I stopped and thought about how this might expand upon the words used within the piece did I begin to tie words to ideas which were obviously not the ones you chose or thought of.

This brings me to what you thought of, and how you claimed to be using metaphor within your piece. But I would ask this question. Is metaphor useful without something to apply it to? Just because free falling can be metaphorical to love doesn't make it one that means anything outside of its base definitions.

This is how metaphor is defined.
"a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable."

But what is your metaphor applying to outside of your mind? Why should we as the reader ever think of love, instead of irrelevance if you don't apply your meaning to something?

With all due respect my friend... who is it that says poetry has to be understood all the time to have meaning?

Think of art galleries... people walking around, all taking different things from the paintings in front of them. Same with poetry. You don’t get it, I understand that. But some people on my current reader list will immeadiatly because they spend time with it.

To be perfectly honest, most of my poetry is pretty on the level. Without flowery words. In your face. Direct. But I don’t have to be that way all the time. This thread is about dark poetry and this was my offering to it, understood by the masses or not.

So I assist with the running of the DU podcast here on deep underground, and our Strong Language segment actually explores poetry like this every month. And what I find very interesting every single month is that all five of us bring something veryyyyy different to the table when it comes to discussing poetry and how we interpret things. Not one opinion is ever the same. And I think that applies to this conversation between you and I very much so.

Regardless, thank you for your opinion and it’s most valid. As is anybody’s opinion who puts reason behind their view.

If you don't understand a piece of poetry or art then it makes it meaningless to the viewer or reader and they will pass it by... That's what happens in galleries...

You say "who says it has to be understood all the time" but then go on to talk about people who it would click with and understand. I don't understand your argument here.

But I'm not sure what part of your argument refutes what I've said. You want to tell me "You just don't understand it." But you're not answering the questions I posed to you which I see as worrisome personally.  Why does your DU podcast matter here? You consented to my opinion, why are you now becoming defensive and using the podcast or other peopole as a way to qualify yourself? I never put you down did I? I only asked what your metaphors are tied to essentially.

Though I would note, just like I was able to create sense out of the randomness I perceived I think you might be kidding yourself into believing that because certain people are more capable of doing so they are taking the same or a similar message as you are from your work.

Still, however, you never answered what your metaphors apply to outside of what you are personally thinking which is what metaphors are used with and for. You want to say its metaphorical but metaphors also rely on a foundation, one that isn't presented in your work.

I’m not defensive at all in fact I’ve been calm and polite throughout. Neither am I arguing. I thought we were having a conversation, not an argument 🤷‍♀️

I don’t feel the need to explain my metaphors beyond what I already have because as I’ve explained before, that is prerogative of the reader. Our podcast was mentioned purely to illustrate the fact that everyone has a different opinion in regards to us discussing every month on our Strong Language segment.

I’m off to work. I hope you have a lovely day and submit some poetry of your own to this thread. Apparently meaningful discussion is what the forums are for sometimes. Who’d of thunk it.

Yeah you... will have to wait for someone besides me. I am not qualified to really respond to free-verse.
