Not sure who told you that; however, what others think do not define who you are as a person or writer. Nor does their opinion define your poetry in the mind of others. It's just their opinion; what you give attention to will follow you.
Just support other writers, comment on their work, and you'll get support in return. That's just the way it works around here. Ignore the others; accept their opinion as their own, just don't allow it to define you.
Know the truth about yourself, even if others have not come to the same conclusion ( yet ).
i learned this lesson from Ahavati and many other Veteran Poets during last years NaPo
after i posted my Day 6 spill, Biscuit Camels.

A) Anyone who criticizes as opposed to critiques poetry usually knows little about it or is an ass or both.
B) NaPoWriMo is never about creating polished poetry.

Thank you Ahavati, Johnny, Layla, Luna, Imperfectedstone and Tallen!... So extremely touching!
Between my iPad and the environment... I can barely respond. They all are trying to surpass my weatherstorm of determination. Actually, they are winning.
I can barely respond to or read anything that's been written this April. Despite the fact this is not a competition, I'm not trying to be amazing... and further... this is my discretionary time. I'm being talked to at random now. It's hard to be civil without real personal time. I'm doing it... actually, but at the expense of what I want.
So me here less... them jealous more...
I'm confused...
I feel like a gay person being stuffed into the closet...

Well, I've already done the teams and a few entrants I'm pretty certain will finish. Kinda wanted to wait a bit and see what cadets were still with us halfway through; they're likely to finish then.

OK, the honeymoon is SO over. The last few days' writes have been like pulling teeth. Rotten, stinky teeth.
My brain is so dry and I'm having a hard time even caring.....
Sorry for the negativity. Just thought I'd come whine for a bit. I almost gave up.

This week was the 1st week i was ready to quit,
last year.
& so i know a thing or 2 about running on empty.
Even this year having NO muse to inspire and support me, i knew i'd struggle and this week has been a bitch.
& so i sit down with no music, noise or talking for 30 minutes and write............something.
I don't care if good or perceived good as i just want to post for another day.
i am not certain this helps You
but am hoping it does even if a wee bit

Layla said:Ew, We can't write a perfect poem every time. Each poem has its audience and how someone reads and interprets is so subjective that we can't contorl if they will like every single thing we write.
Sometimes the best of our work gets so little feedback and other times mediocre or less than par gets great deal of comments, discussions praise.
In my experience, its best not to share or show what you write with family or friends.
Firstly, poetry is a language all on its own and the basic reader or someone who speaks common language is not trained to read or understand poetic tongue, metaphors, imagery...these are all ways of expressing in uncommon ways that the mass is untrained for.
Basically, don't have expectations from people who don't have the ability to see beyond the words. I know how much our families and close friends mean to us and they're approval and praise always gives us the confidence that we are understood/accepted by the ones we love but its not their fault, they just don't know how to understand or sometimes relate to what the underlying message is in poetry.
This is sound advice, I so agree. Poets have a different way of using language that takes study to understand. The more study it requires, the better it is; that's poetry. If it shakes someone up, it worked. Some people have the acquired taste for being challenged that way. If they can't understand that, they don't have it.
