Poetry Contest

Write a NEW poem dedicated to the Spirit of Christmas

On September 21, 1897, The New York Sun printed an editorial response to an eight-year-old little girl, Virginia O'Hanlon's question, asking if there was a Santa Claus.  While the answer was printed as an unsigned editorial, it was written by veteran newsman Francis Pharcellus Church, and has since become history’s most reprinted newspaper editorial in dozens of languages, books, movies, posters, stamps, even other editorials, and so on.

Guidelines:

- New Writes Only
- One poem per persona
- Any Style Accepted ( including visual and spoken word )
- Please no erotica nor heavy cursing
- No word limit restrictions ( how can you contain a Spirit? )

What I'm looking for is a genuine expression regarding the 'Spirit of Christmas' in your own words and experience - past, present, or imagined future.

This competition is open to everyone, and I have opted to refrain from commenting until after the winner is announced, because I want the poems to stand on their own essence without my influence or personal interpretation.

The Letter and response in its entirety:

Dear Editor—

I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

Virginia O'Hanlon
115 West Ninety Fifth Street

VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence.

We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! He lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Christmas of ‘86

Each Thanksgiving
a Christmas Wish insert
sponsored by the United Way
accompanies our county's newspaper

It's an opportunity for local ‘Angels'
to ease less-fortunate suffering

Nothing out of the ordinary
appeared from previous years—
a meal, groceries, clothes, toys
firewood, an affordable home
help with utilities, a car
and so forth

until the request
by an eight-year-old boy

"A Bicycle Repair Kit"

He wasn’t wishing
for a brand new bicycle;
but, a $2.00 repair kit
to fix his old one’s flat

I wasn’t sure
what to think of that—
was he appreciative
for what he had;
or, just taking care
of what he owned—
perhaps he was afraid
to ask for more
because he felt
he hadn’t been good—
maybe he'd been taught
the quality of age;
things aren't made
like they were, after all

I thought of Solomon
who could've asked for anything
his heart desired—
but, wished only for wisdom
to lead God's people instead;
yet was gifted all things
beyond his imagining
because of humility

Regardless, a new bike
replete with repair kit
is what this kid deserved—
anonymously, of course;
because Angels should remain just that:
The Spirit of Christmas in disguise
miracles whose only name is Love—
   proving the humble are worthy
   of so much more
   than imagined possible
   or even wished for

For Goodness Sake

Where north can go no further at the world’s tipsiest top.
A land of ice and snow conceals the home of Santa’s shop.
With Santa and his wife are his reindeer and the elves.
Stocking toys they made all year in boxes and on shelves.
Known to all is Santa’s list that names every girl and boy.
And tells of there heart’s desire found in every special toy.
How the list is made has been a secret until now.
A child’s note is always used but this is really how.
As children lie snug in there beds so peacefully asleep.
Tiny fairies fly close to them daring not a single peep.
While they dream the fairies know is where a wish will slip.
They listen for the whispers from the babes own sleeping lips.
Once it’s told right away the wish goes on the list.
An elf then quickly makes it so the present isn’t missed.
At Christmas Eve when the present’s brought comes the fairy too.
Poor Santa can’t slide down the chimneys of houses that are new.
Where Santa can’t get in the fairy is there to help him out.
As she flies through furnace stacks and duct work all about.
Once let in he lays the gifts under the Christmas tree.
Sharing milk and cookie snacks is Santa and the small fairy.
So this is why you should have good thoughts always in your head.
For that night when tiny ears may visit you in bed.

Festive

Halloween has gone
And soon there'll be snow
Christmas is coming
Only a few weeks to go

The nights get darker
There's a chill in the air
The people all get busy
There's so much to prepare

Laura starts looking
For all the nice gifts
She knows that to afford them
She'll have to work the night shifts

The days go by
Soon Santa will be here
The Smith's start to worry
They're still paying off last year

Single mam Sally
Hates seeing her boys upset
She buys all the newest toys
And adds to her credit card debt

The decorations go up
Everyone gets the holiday feels
John knocks down an old woman
To get to the best Black Friday deals

Families enjoy the markets
They sing 'tis the season'
Round the corner, they don't care
There's a homeless man freezing

Old Jasper's family's all gone
They don't pick up the phone to call
He'll be lonely this Christmas
The tears start to fall

Karen lays in hospital
Her situation hopeless
Her only present this year
Is a terminal diagnosis

Tom's wife just left him
She took his kids, his house, his pride
He grabs a rope from the cupboard
This will be his last Yuletide

The festive time is full of
Fun, food and drink
But for others it's a struggle
So just stop....
And think

Spread a little joy to someone
Be it a friend, a stranger, your mother
The most important gift this Christmas
Is being kind to one another

Something tells me I should've titled this competition: Virginia Does the North Pole.

LOL! Seriously. . .I know the Christmas Spirit is out in full force! I can feel it!

Snow for Christmas

Meet Pinto the mouse and his family of three,
who live down my garden by the roots of a tree
Elmina his wife and their two naughty boys,
Hushka the quiet and Deano the noise.

One dark Christmas eve came a tap at my door
and there they stood this cold family of the four.
The snow was so heavy it had filled up their home
and poor little Hushka was froze to the bone.

"Oh please can you help us"? said Elmina in tears,
"it's no fun for small mice at this time of year".
Pinto explained they’d got caught in the snow,
dug themselves out but had nowhere to go.

"Come in" I said, "the fires nice and warm,
I'll get you some soup and keep you from harm".
For Elmina and Pinto I made a bed from a box,
while Hushka and Deano snuggled down in a sock.

In the morning I woke with poor Huska in tears
and Deano was shouting with his nose in my ear.
Wake up, wake up, we’ve had a bad dream,
It's now Christmas day and Santa’s not been.

Oh, I said and looked out through the frost
perhaps when you moved poor Santa got lost.
I gave them breakfast, some cream and mince pies,
then we all wrapped up warm and went outside.

Look! said Huska there are tracks on the roof,
Oh yes! said Deano, they're reindeers hoofs.
We followed the trail to the roots of their tree,
the boys started digging and giggled with glee.

They disappeared into tunnels but finally came back,
running towards us with two bright red sacks.
"You had us all worried", Elmina said,
"Santa left these in the snow by our beds".

They took them inside and we sat with the boys
and watched as they quickly unwrapped their toys.
I made Christmas dinner and the mice had some cheese
then we all played some games because the boys said please.

That night as we drifted to sleep in our beds,
the boys spoke quiet but I heard what they said.
Deano was glad we were all there together,
and Hushka thought it was his best Christmas ever.

The True Santa

Slumber quiet, my dear sweet child
The vex you fear, my presence in all hemispheres
Please let me calm those notions wild
I am here that everlasting Christmas cheer

As i laboured in the north
The doubts you harbour
Spoken now as secret thoughts
To bring a smile so wide with my endevours

Because belief and cherish can be lost
So just the job to write a list
My credibility melt like thawing frost
For faith will help my all exist

To be that wish with sparkle round
Fly by night and pulled by dreams
As rainbows colours arch in bands
I will come like make believe

Do not waver from a goodness creed
And with practiced stealth that eve
Try so hard just as you please
C'ause just for you I live and breath

Seek that box that bears your name
That stocking full for you to claim
Excitement "just" that you display
Your gifts my entourage have made

Sweet Virginia I am that Clause
Not just Red garb and hearty laugh
Beneficence that giving shows
A true fact not just perhaps

Because I believe....

Mary did you know?
and when did you believe...
Was is upon the most Oh Holy Night...
Did you Go tell it on the mountain?
Did you witness your baby boy
walk on all that water?
And when you did,
did Oh come all ye faithful
or did they think you were crazy
only because you did indeed
see what was needed
and Mary, I do believe...

I See You (1220)

Maybe because today has been one year
Since you’ve been gone,
I get more nostalgic around the season,
I still mourn you in a way.

Sometimes I see you in strangers,
Or when I see men my age with their fathers
I think – that could’ve been us.
Or when I see an old man in the street,
In dire straits
I think – at one time that was you.

Maybe it’s because around this time of year,
I look back and appreciate you more,
All the troubles and tribulations you went through,
All the plights I’ll never know.

But I see you in those men,
In cold winter mornings on my way to work,
In their slow walk,
With white beards,
The breath visible in the air,
Empty stomachs.

One meal,
I think,
Just one meal will get that man through the day,
Buying a stranger in need one meal will give him hope,
Showing someone kindness will give them faith,
To maybe one day see his family again,
After all it’s the season of giving,
So I’ll give a little bit of hope.

“Give me an extra # 2”
Maybe in feeding a stranger,
I’m feeding you,
For the times you were homeless or hungry,
Without the hope of seeing us again,
And maybe
I’ll see your smile in a stranger’s face.

A Christmas/Birthday Card!

The time once again to celebrate Christ
remember His birth and huge sacrifice
Born in the manger, HE took on flesh
the Son of a virgin, the first miracle success

His beginning so humble, not fit for a king
the story be told and the praises we sing
we share same traditions, the giving of gifts
decorations, celebrations and spirits we lift

It is time to remember, the most famous of births
That was ever recorded on this planet earth
He walked around among us, salvation his plan
redemption of sinners, for every woman and man

His wisdom He left us, incase you've not heard
It's "The number one best seller", we call it the word
The truths and the wisdom, Have stood test of time
"Jesus Christ Happy Birthday", The Savior of mine
