Poetry Contest

New Member of the Month Feature!

Welcome to the new competition series spotlighting a "New Member of the Month" to be featured in the DUP 'New Member of the Month Hall of Fame' and on DU's official social networking pages for November 2019, sponsored this month by Ahavati and JohnnyBlaze ( if anyone would like to assume this competition beginning in December, please message one of us ).

You have two weeks to nominate your favorite poems from a NEW DUP poet - someone who has been a member for no more than six months.

Please note the following when making nominations:

1. Self nominations are not accepted. The great majority of the competitions here are about spotlighting one's own work on a particular topic or theme.  This is a chance to nominate that poem that you wish you had written but some other great talent here beat you to it.

2. Until this comp is established, there is no limit to nominations; However, you can't nominate more than one poem per individual newbie.

3. No DUPLICATES. If someone nominates the same poem the entry will be deleted. If you like it that much wait and vote for it!

4. Any genre except erotica or pornography. This is a Facebook feature and we must adhere to their guidelines.

5. Any member who is banned or disables their account PRIOR to the win will be automatically disqualified.

6. One win per member per 12 months.

Any nominated member who wishes to opt out of the competition may do so by messaging JohnnyBlaze or me.  We can contact the person who nominated you and request an alternate nomination. Or, you can contact them yourself.

Nomination Duration is two weeks followed by a week of site voting!

Foundation on a bruise

Sunday was silenced
by Saturday night,
a split lip sips coffee
from a worlds greatest mum mug.

Little ones won't get dressed today,
stay wrapped in a blue ray.
They know Disney isn't real,
they know which characters are at play
and all their lines.

A head scarf keeps her mind
from spilling out onto the supermarket,
sunglasses stop the glare.
Her parking lot fists, smash
against the steering wheel,
fingers tremble and clench
the deepening breaths of a private crisis.

The children risk a glance at dad
as the back door breaks its seal,
his beer goes into the fridge first.
"You've been a long time, were starving in here"
She steadies herself,
ready to speak for the first time that day
and takes a bread knife out of the drawer.

It's a question, she knows will reset the day.
"Who wants peanut butter sandwiches?"
"Me me me" shout the children resuming their childhood.
She spreads it so thick,
they can't see the bread.

Long Exhale on a Cloud

the tightness settles into my eyes
gauzy, jewel-toned shades
float down to cover my mind
satin pillows under my head
chest expands to blow
the sultry, ancient incense
from my torched, heavy breath

my hazy soul sighs
long exhale on a cloud
all my pieces draw inward
naked and exposed fully,
my critical eye softens
I see beauty in the rolling landscape;
scars create striking topography,
pleading with desire
for your curious explorations,
the ones I shied away from
when last you dared to wander,
your fingers leaving
the safety of the markers
clearly laid along the path

surrounded by the lush kingdom,
my fantasy conquered
I dive from the platform
built of crushing expectations;
responsibility that feels
so much like
an anchor to a time and place
I never meant to stay
my soul was made to soar
and ever since I was confined,
caged with the finest shackles
I can’t seem
to get my wings to remember
how to fly,
so I plummet instead

the cold of the deep
startling my chest
momentary panic
I’m in too deep
it’s way too fast;
no going back now

stretching my limbs,
I swim downward
into the dark
where all my beasties play
I have no fear of them here
after all, aren’t the lot of us
just misunderstood monsters?
I belong to them
their devotion to me complete
allowed to be my whole self
in this blank space,
all of these ominous shapes
are my most intimate partners;
they will bare their teeth
and nip my skin,
bringing blood to the water
until I’m surrounded
by my own horror

but I will calm them,
once again
with my practiced, healing hands -
light forged of sharp, shiny trauma
melted into the dull bone-ache
of the social awkward’s fallout
the metallic tang of active contrition,
and so much tailspinning

my fingertips glide slowly
along their slimy sides
and when they have been soothed,
my magnificent leviathans
retreat slowly downward
to the abyss -
a place I can’t follow;
(not after that one time)
I was nearly consumed
staring after them,
suspended between
sun-dappled waves
and icy cold midnight,
I wait in limbo
until I can’t see their shadows
before heading back
to my sun-drenched palace
to play

Hi, Jade, Luna has been here for more than three months ( we checked hers for nominations ); however, we are having difficulty finding new members; therefore, I've altered the rules to say no more than six months to allow more to be nominated.

Thanks, it’s appreciated, being as this is a brand new monthly competition, and working through the who’s Who of bewbies, and finding them.

I love the fact of this comp and the spoken- word comp... it’s the time to welcome them to the Deep family.

Silent Prayers

On pinioned wings the night does fly
Upon celestial winds
Which caress the moon and steer the stars
Before the day begins

And so,

In dreams go I to tethered heart
And quietly slip the moor
To sail upon the darkling sea
In search of farther shore
Quiet the dip
And then the sweep of hands steady at the oars
That I might find you
- wherever you are
Beneath the wheeling stars

For the dreams of men and gods
Are doubtless just the same,
All that exists is love and pride
Played on different plane

I have seldom missed you
as much as I always do -
which is to say imperfectly
I miss you everyday.

And how oft said I a silent prayer
that you might remember me
Where 'er you drift alone tonight
upon this dream tossed sea

Life’s not easy nor a perfect place,
only better when your there.
So, still i dream of your love's grace
And know this, that I still care

He's one of my favorites; however, he has been here longer than 6 months; therefore ( and most unfortunately ), doesn't qualify?

You should check out his book I reviewed in the DU author's thread!  You would LOVE IT!
