Poetry Contest Description
Literary Device
Avoiding cliches that occassionally work but usually don't...such as thinning the veil, the calm before the storm and or it was love at first site; otherwise enter your most unique metaphors (1 metaphor per poem and expand on it) for any universal themes: love, hate, fear, etc. 2 entry max. No epics please; reasonable length to increase the likelihood of everyone being read. We apologize for not specifying length on this particular contest. This was honestly and legitimately overlooked on my part. No harm or malice intended to anyone who entered prior to that change.

Rain always puts me to sleep
In the middle of night before,
I awoke to the sound of rain
In what seemed like a sated roar
Of their deep voices, of their stain.
'Twas a dream in my half-aware,
I questioned its validity
Then dozed off like it wasn't there,
This weather-beaten mystery.
Then yesterday passed like my thoughts
Adrift, clouds hid daylight away.
I watched what the weather had wrought,
Then fell back to sleep where I lay.
The afternoon walked in on me
And claimed "It's been raining, y'know."
I vaguely looked over to see,
And murmured "I want you to go."
The day turned away as it sighed,
Went gray, fading into the wall.
I knew it had made up a lie,
And slept hoping raindrops will fall.
I awoke to the sound of rain
In what seemed like a sated roar
Of their deep voices, of their stain.
'Twas a dream in my half-aware,
I questioned its validity
Then dozed off like it wasn't there,

And slept hoping raindrops will fall.

Son of a Gun
His daddy was a 747 magnum
His grandfather was a shotgun
He was actually a derringer.
We will not speak of his mother
She did not like firearms in the house.
He was a smoking gun
Always making drug deals
And enjoying pot parties.
He loved Westerns as a child
And never grew tired of them
Riding off into the sunset.
In his youth he joined the army
He wanted to make a difference
And he did
As a sniper his scope
Autographed many an enemy.
He returned home after the war
And opened a gun shop
He was very successful in the business world
And was soon swimming to the bank each day.
He married the teller and they had four water guns.

Detailing the

Every low

Lift it, "it" is you.
And I can serve saliciously
as a hair split
an end of protein in potent strand
I've been bleached to salt
I've been bleached to salt
A wall to scale with brittle beds
nails breaking
bald-tipped
10 little sweating heads
You give me no anchor
and say to use my legs
as a hair split
an end of protein in potent strand
I've been bleached to salt

Meta What Four
meta , meta , meta what for
a trinity of meta at the door
meta within venturing fourth
meta outside one with source
meta rotating hypercube
self aware in attitude
longitude and latitude
questioning it's certitude
it's order of magnitude
exactitude ultimate infinitude
dependent on how it is viewed

In the Deep
He wrote, “I am the captain of my soul!”
But Henley steered a much more noble helm!
The schooner that I steer tacks near sheol
My soul has foundered in this murky realm!
Most fearful dreams appear here in the deep
Where, undisturbed, malignant spirits lie
The secrets of the sea, forever sleep
Unseen, except by lost and damn’ed eyes
My fate was bought and sealed so long ago
And naught can change it now, unless by chance
My soul, by favored winds who deign to blow
Reprieve my way, may lift my circumstance!
Once overwhelmed by doubt and ghastly fears
Shall I evade the place of wrath and tears?

Side To Side
Side to side
beaten a hundred times
at the hands of pride
down the line smashed
how long will it last
on the floor crashed
Side to side
aimlessly tossed before I fly
the innocent left to cry
deflated I hide
in shame but to you
it was only just a game
beaten a hundred times
at the hands of pride
down the line smashed
how long will it last
on the floor crashed
Side to side
aimlessly tossed before I fly
the innocent left to cry
deflated I hide
in shame but to you
it was only just a game

Mankind in Dreamland
Pestered and pursued
by unknown foes
A topsyturvy land
where snakes can have horns
and cows can have fangs.
Night'mares' where the day's stallions
make mountains out of molehills
A chance to witness greek mythology-like creatures for real
For dreamland tis a place for the unreal and surreal.
Those hair-raising scary scary dreams
beset with horrified silent screams!
We do try to interrupt nightmares, pinching ourselves
With relief wake up to see there aren't any horrid elves.
We also try to interpret dreams filled with mystery
But gifted dream interpreters like prophet Joseph
Are now part of biblical human history
All in all, dreamland's fascination
for extra-ordinary exaggeration
and tall-tale imagination
Where myth and legend come to life
An amalgam of fiction or real strife
Where assorted monsters of the mind
reign supreme in that REM sleep of our kind.
Yet on the other hand the wishful, wistful sweet sweet dreams
where fantasies form mirages bordered by fanciful seams.
Where castles in the air that humans build, float gently down to earth
only to shoot back up unto nowhere from the awakened one's berth.
In dreamland a pauper girl can be a princess or fairy fair
for daydreams extend into the night and linger on there.
A quote I took to heart and it to console all and sundry
'that if your sweet dreams don't come true, don't you fret
for atleast your nightmares didn't come true either,
so just heave a sigh, by and by.
Every night let us all just fly away and escape
And lo behold the extraordinary world of Dreamscape.
