Poetry Contest Description
Valentine's Day in history
Jeez, it's February and no Valentine's Day comps yet ??
Well, here you go ! But.....let's kick it up a notch and instead of the hearts and chocolates, kissy-lovey-lingerie and sex aspect, let's go for some historical events. Here's a fairly extensive list of Valentine's Day happenings throughout history, so have a browse and write some poems based on whatever strikes you from the list:
https://www.onthisday.com/events/february/14
As many poems as you want, on topics from the list (or if you find something else not on this particular listing, go for it). Any style, length ( no novels), no collabs, two weeks.
( I'll eat the heart shaped chocolates while I watch you all write--get going! )

First red rose
Sometime in the dark medieval past
when poetry was so steadfast
and penned a sheath of flowery words
a sonnet to enchant the birds
they spoke of love where ideals start
and portraits clasped in lockets grasp
a lock of hair for the chosen one
to give away on a spring day
to bring a blush each fair cheek
the dandy and the cuckold
they saw a chance to advance
to gain the hand of one so sweet
the first to bring a rose and not just pros
not to pay for lucky charms
lovers potions and amulets
a red rose between the teeth
I think it was on valentines day
wrote on scrolls with in scratchy ink
until that day only roses pink
but fertilized with red pigs blood
the rose as red as lips
cultivates love so to speak
and so it came red rose to be
hemoglobin its mystery
when poetry was so steadfast
and penned a sheath of flowery words
a sonnet to enchant the birds
they spoke of love where ideals start
and portraits clasped in lockets grasp
a lock of hair for the chosen one

Valentine's Day, 1929
On Valentine's Day in 1929
In merry old England's
Paddington countryside
One of the greatest medicines
To to cure love's afflictions
Was invented by a Scotsman
By the name of Sir Alexander Fleming
He called his love drug, Penicillin
I think we should all clap for that!

oriental center
Under the crescent reflective moon
An eastern cryptic lore
The alabaster slopes
Sit on the sun set shores...
On its flank my ship goes inward
My energy drawn down the ravine
From my decent off the mountains
My paradise lost in a dream...
An inlet to the vesica pisces
Found under a Tibetan sacred tree
A generational spot to port
Center in a sacred place to sea...
Through a gateway to the holy city
There sits two symmetrical planes
From separation to oneness
The female water it contains...
An observer to the observed
Her flower of life in a tree
Is overlapping in spheres
My sail spread on her ocean breeze...
I now wash in the moon shine lake
My soul journeys the silver river
Slow motion of her hand to come
As her heart now draws me in her...
