The Spindlemaker

Some know early, Grandmotherly
ways, the beauty in details, and
how lovely it is, the inner rush
on blustery Autumn afternoons.

Some come, unwillingly
to Earth
and allow themselves to be
shaved away
in layers, turned spindles, by
the Master Carver.

There is no youth--only short
stature to mask the preservationist
in child-form, who hears
death clocks ticking in walls
and wishes to be with God,
instead.

Some belong on another plane
and can only observe, as life
slides by in hues just shy of
full colors, finding more peace
in smoky lilacs than vibrant reds.

Some will look on in helpless
joy, and love, and horror
as their own someday-daughter
becomes them.

There is nothing but distractions
while the Spindlemaker turns
each masterpiece to the last
bits of dust
signaling completion and
an open veil in the wildflower fields,
an invitation to finally trek home
where some, like us, always knew
we preferred to remain --
Didn't we?

Vine Ripened

Indian summer first beheld your red-gold crown
'n tiny fists that grasped too soon
the lay of broken lands
you had no desire to rule
or choice but to traverse
In spite of your directional disfunctionality
you navigated the wastelands
came out the other side
unscathed to the naked eye

Falling all over yourself to fit in
you kept your head down
nose in books
ducked the troubles
that plagued kith and kin
found yourself
lost
in your own

Wintered a while
in discontent
seething but settling
for second string
in a discordant
rock opera
waiting
to become the fat lady
to sing

Finally
a new tune
springs
from this little chickadee
I took all that you had
all that you knew
and hoped
and dreamed
and sat down to write
words poured out
with the music
from your heart
to foster
this new growth
new life
that's climbing the trellis
you built for me

reasons why...

Side A
all you feel, you suffer
and all your dreams
made me the person
that I am today

all the crying, all the pain
disappointments, the memories
I’m sorry… but,
it won’t fade away

I wish you’d slept on dry pillows
more often than the wet ones

I know your knees been your comfort
but I wish there was someone

to stroke your head and say
“Everything’s going to be okay”

don’t be afraid of blood,
one-day red’s going to be
your favourite

don’t be afraid of the dark
one day you going to turn
everything bright

try not to complain
don’t put yourself to blame
and,
please don’t go into that cave
you are going to lose
the best times of your life
to a monster, I still regret

he will use your pain
turn into anger
he will use frustration
turn into despair

whispers will reach you
with a voice of an angel
in a haze of colours
you are lead to danger

but,
you don’t know
so, how could you resist?

--

Side B
its ok
its all good
you are special
you are not abandoned
you are a gift
you are an artist

enjoy the roller-coaster
hold on tight

pain will end
dark clouds will clear
rain will wash your stains
the sun will bring you
a new beginning

till the time comes
hold on tight
enjoy the ride

like I did…

Rainbows

The red and yellow plastic telephone
Has large buttons for fat clumsy fingers
The numbers on the buttons are worn
Animal transfer prints adorn the base
The pick-up a rainbow and two clouds
The phone played “I can sing a rainbow.”
It could only handle out going calls
The phone bashed and all scratched
So well loved and so well used
You made so many calls, expecting
But nobody ever rang you back

Red calls were the hardest calls to make
You were in perpetual danger
And there was so much blood
No policemen came
No nurses came
Even god didn’t answer

Yellow calls were frequent and furtive
You were so easily scared and freaked out
You had more reason to fear than most
No Priest came
No Nuns came
Even god didn’t answer

Pink calls happened, just not very often
You were deprived of love and hugs
Nobody told you they loved you
Your mother seldom came
Your siblings seldom came
Still god didn’t answer

Green calls just seeking some peace
You, curled up in a ball weeping
For you there was to be no peace
Batman never came
Superman never came
God didn’t answer

Calls the colour purple a child in slavery
Bound, gagged, beaten and encased
Coloured black by coal dust in the cellar
J F Kennedy never came
Martin Luther King never came
Even god didn’t answer

Orange calls just pleading for brightness
To see the sun through blackened puffy eyes
For you darkness was the only light to see
Demons never came
Satan never came
Even god didn’t answer

Blue calls happened every day
The deepest sadness seeking rescue
You begging for the help that didn’t come
Your brother never came
Your sister never came
Even god never answered

I tried to phone you today
In my mind I heard it ringing
“I can sing a rainbow”
It rang out, you didn’t answer
I just hope you haven’t given up
I called to say I am sorry
Sorry for not being strong enough
Sorry I couldn’t protect you from evil
Sorry I could not assist you to escape
Escape all these inexcusable horrors
I called you today to tell you
I am ready now to release you
To be the child you were meant to be

Red and yellow and pink and green,
Purple and orange and blue
I can sing a rainbow
Sing a rainbow
You can sing one too.

ROAR-for It's a KNOCKOUT comp.

I know right now
everything seems gray
and you're feeling powerless

at just 17, you've already seen
and experienced so much suffering
and you don't seem to catch a break

you've witnessed the deaths
of the ones you love
and most of them still breathe

you want to be heard
but your voice is weak
your words ineffectual

you let others do the talking for you

you lust for glory
but you lack the courage
to just go for it

you missed a lot of opportunities

but listen,

there's no point in
dwelling on all that
you will find your strength

you will become strong
because you know what it's like
to be powerless

you will be fearless
because you know what it's like
to be frozen in its grip

you won't have an easy life
but your life will be full of color again
though there will be lots of red

and if you keep your heart open
you'll find a lot of love
just waiting for you to come across it

just try not to let it rule your decisions

but none of it is going to come
from moping around the house
getting stoned and playing Xbox

I know that you've never liked conflict
but life itself is a struggle
you've got to fight for anything worthwhile

and don't be so hard on yourself
remember that you are a proud lion
you're king of the fucking jungle

let the world hear you fucking ROAR!

Souris Pour Moi

(Smile For Me)

Where have you gone my feisty little princess?
Your vigor and zest all but a shadow of what was once.
How I long for the smile that comes despite the hunger?

I missed those times when you can sleep dreamless;
When you can run and chase yellow fireflies without care,
And those moments when you can just cry without hiding.

Are you still there, burning dimly somewhere within me?
The rough passage and heated crucible wiped your innocence,
Or is it just your ignorance and foolishness that got taken away?

Will time be so kind to let you out before memories turns to Grey,
Faded and becomes clouded with illusions of youth amidst...
The brittle bone and dim eyesight of the altered wisdom of old?

If you can hear my plea, please answer me, let me feel you,
And once more be you, if not, like you just a little bit.
When no one is looking and I feel blue, fire up my torch within.

Let me see the road where I walk, even how muddy and steep,
Ease my journey, let me breathe in your golden essence again —
That child in me, stay alive and continue to remind me...

Not to be afraid of green monsters inside my head.
For delusions are for the sleeping, and I am still awake.
Not to waste a single effort you had made,
For everything counts, and I am not done collecting.
Not to forget that your choices were mine as well,
For whatever it was, it made me who I am, and still becoming.
To never lose hope and continue on living,
With a heart full of courage.

Let me look at you with my brown eyes under the shadows...
Of many sundowns and moon rises, of tides that ebbed and splashed.
To feel humbled with a gracious heart for the way things had turned.

Despite the many challenges of the road you had traveled
Of the many crossroads and fork roads you had chosen to take
I am here still hoping, not without scars, but all the better for it.

Keep smiling, and I will remember as I walk ahead.

Dearest Little Bobby

I am who you will become
shards of colored glass
green, blue, rose,  yellow
sharp remnants
of shattered Madonna with child
now made smooth yet no less magnificent
by battering waves of experience
vicissitudes of living
beautiful, at times cruel

Please understand this
you did nothing wrong
to force mommy to flee
she did nothing wrong
no selfish plot to abandon
embattled by cancer
tenaciously she fought
to remain in your world
celebrate her love
from her courage learn

Daddy’s hasty decisions
will break your tender heart
give cause to doubt your worth
you alone decide your value
think nothing of what others say
no matter their position or power
once critics and naysayers
most loyal fans become
audaciously unpack
your brilliant bundle of talents

Though banal advice,
every-commencement-speech wisdom,
banish from your lexicon
this demeaning set
I could have
I should have
I would have
useless words of regret
are they all
substitute with I will
I will be my fondest friend
I will openly display my kind heart
I will always do MY best
not that of the other guy
I will be the best dishwasher
I will be the best ice cream scooper
your first forays into the working world
sorry to spoil the surprise

With love, be patient
more discerning with romance
more generous with intimacy
kiss, hug, hold hands with abandon
cry, laugh, sing as much as possible
you will fail in preparation for success
pain is unavoidable and requisite
necessary to knowing pleasure
but don’t over indulge
eat right, exercise…
alright, alright I’m shutting up
there so much to tell you
love yourself, love yourself, truly love yourself
much more than I love you now
you’ll be alright
of this I am certain

Fondest Regards,
Bob
