Poetry Contest

Write a poem in a dialect other than your own
Example of a dialect poem: (because I can't post URLs yet, Google "No Lickle Twang" and click the first link. For a reading of that poem, put "Sankofa 2012: No Lickle Twang" into YouTube)

Maybe it's a bit presumptuous for a member as new as I to make a competition, but nevertheless...

Respectfully, there's already an endless challenge in the Forum about posting poems in other languages.

There's no objection if a new member wants to host a competition, as long as it's about a subject that's judgeable.  And please reconsider the duration of this challenge: two weeks would be plenty long, not two months.

Meantime, welcome to DUP.  I'm Jade.

Respectfully, the competition description states another dialect, not another language. The example I offered was in a dialect of English, not another language in and of itself. And I happen to think myself capable of judging this subject in the context of a competition re: poetic quality, and also that two months is fine as a duration.

Meantime, thank you for your welcome. I'm Manley.

Thank you Manley & welcome

There's a tendency around here for new members that start competitions, to not follow through with them, leaving them to fall on our abandoned list for voting, hence Jade's query and why we like to ask.
It appears that you are on the ball , though, so we appreciate that.

Thank you for your comment clarifying Jade's, I really do appreciate it, and I apologise, Jade, for my defensive stance. Just as you were clearly worried about this competition falling by the wayside, so I wasn't sure of your motives and felt that you were making unfair, assumptive value judgements about me.

To further clarify the aim of this contest, one could, for instance, write a poem in a Northern English or Southern American dialect.

Thank you, Manley.  I'm very glad we can both proceed on solid level ground going forward.  And I thank our lovely MadameL for helping, I've told her in the past i want to grow up to be just like her!

Until later, be well and enjoy settling in, Manley.

Well weren't we precious
          <mild erotic>

Lawd, that boy had a set on him.
Eatin' corn through a picket fence
If he had half a mind to try.
Followin' the breeze of my skirt,

He watched me sidle up the steps,
And come close to seein' Christmas.
He'd mutter underneath his breath,
"I'd run with the big dawgs for you."

And ev'er time I'd let him near,
That's just exactly what he'd do
When it'd come time to kissin' me.
Each time, be dissin' family.

And that's the way it was with us.
It wasn't clear just who knew what,
But ev'er cousin and their blood
Was bound to cross the line just once.

Well-meaning, interfering folk
Was always pullin' us aside,
"No right to carry on that way
And get the short end o' the stick!"

"Now hold your horses, shug', come 'ere."
He rode me hard 'n finished wet.
"You playin' possum?", "Reckon so."
We slept like dead pigs in the sun.

This is a U.S. deep southern dialect, I'm a native west coast Californian.

No 'Ya Don't

Yah, right...
Yah wanna be uh Masshole, an
drive like a wicked maniac
on Route 128?

Ya gutta drop yah "R's" too, an
say "pahk" instead of "Park" an
"yaad" instead of "Yard" like
propah Inglish.

Doan go tellin' me yah wanna
be like me--
yah might not like Baah-stin
or the chowdah house where
they serve lobstah....

(That would be how we speak in Massachusetts--we ain't got accents, the resta yah do!)

I need education, appologies

I come from a country with 11 official languages. We have "street speak" that includes all 11. Is that what we would term as a dialect? In terms of this comp?
