PierreTheMad said:Pygmalion's Meditation

Great Gods of Fate and Fury
guide my hands and
bless these implements

as they attempt to channel passion
into the making of a marvel
granting warmth to an expression
a tribute statuesque
to the power and compassion
you have somehow siphoned into
this one dynamic form

Help me
Nay,
Allow these hands
to catch those sparks of shooting stars
and place them in her eyes
to hear an ardent heartbeat
thumping out my name

to put to shame and rest
all those hollow harpies
that sought to swoop, devouring
from my mortal breast
the life's blood and dreamed-of flesh
contained within this marble womb

I shall name her
... G a l a t e a ...
Pure, perfect, and unchangeable
My Magnum Opus
and indulgent gift unto myself

I pray thee, hearken, Aphrodite.
For if you suffer man,
give me but a chance
to whisper you my wish.

Give her life
that she and I may share
this time together

I fear, without her lips' taste,
that I shall waste away in pining,
in denial
that life could be worth living apart
from the finest poetry of my craft.
An ideal made manifest;
the dream that should not die.

Keep her young as I decay,
hale and hearty as I fade.
Allow me just this mortal span,
this attempt,
to love her as no other man
could possibly assay.

Are you listening my sweet?
Can your spirit hear my pleas?
I am anxious, trembling, waiting, wanting,
to invite you to our home
and I can only hope
you are somewhere in this stone

truely inspiring

i dont really know. . .
want to post, but my knowledge is so limited

Pandora wasent an actual goddess... she was a titan, married to prometheus's (the titan whom gave fire to man) brother. And you can do alittle research for your god/goddess, i know i have had to research some stuff for a couple of my poems

Whilst not a god, but rather one of the Titan race, Prometheus is still quite the fascinating character in his own right. I wrote this poem about him a while back:

- Promethean Promise -

The titan writhed in agony, not physically,
But in ways only old gods, can bestow…
And he remembered his pain so intimately!
He promised himself to cause their woe…
But the old gods died, and he lay forgotten.
His torment becoming a rampant madness,
Until his soul was eaten away, grown rotten.
Enough, had he, of wallowing in sadness…

Humankind discovered where he did dwell.
And to make the old gods weep for his pain,
He showed man, the true depths of his hell!
But they were dead, those gods of antiquity,
And could not quiet the rage that he bore…
Their sprits could only watch him so silently.
At last his fire was spent, cold to the core…

Unbound, was his tether, as man did pay,
The cost the gods were not there to cover.
And so come the seventh old celestial day,
He made a bargain, to become the lover…
Of Death herself, in return for but her kiss!
For only in her arms could he know peace.
She wanted souls, in return for such bliss…
And souls he gave her, his pain unleashed!

She shared her charms,
And he died in her arms.

The winds carry forth,
The flowers, her own,
A Goddess so wanted,
The beloved Persephone.

Her beauty so radiant, Hades dost see,
Rushing forth with his chariot, grabbing her so accurately,
She ran for her life, in terror she screamed,
Little did she know, she was to be his queen.

But lo and behold, she was brought to hell,
In his domain, was where she would dwell,
To the God of the Underworld, would she become bride,
Meanwhile, in the world above, her garden had died.

And thus began the death of eternal spring,
From their own haven, did animals take wing,
Dear Demeter, hast thou gone too far?
The heroes sigh as they watch from their stars.

When mama found her missing, she cried in grief,
She made the trees shed, and left them not a leaf,
She created winter, in her misery,
Until Zeus managed to release beloved Persephone.

However, Hades had her eat the fruit of the dead,
Which complicated the life that she led.
Four months in darkness, two-thirds above,
After all that had happened, her husband, did she ever love?

Empress of the dead, why art thou enraged?
When Hades enticed Minthe right into his cage?
Jealousy sparks from most but not fear,
Admit it, deep in thine heart, you still hold him dear

*i came, i googled, i tried* oh well~

I love it! good job

"Perseus for Eternity"
[Invalid Image - URL must end with jpeg, jpg, gif, png or bmp]

She rose like the sun, brilliant to see, angelic-skin,
bewitching malachite eyes, an unrivaled feminine form,
said she truly loved me.
When she disappeared, my heart sank below the
horizon with her.
Oh, Dear!
Comfort me in my grief, my sad eyes will
never see life the same, this is no game.
Now, each night she rises as Andromeda,
beautiful daughter of the celestial queen,
more gorgeous than the sea nymphs of Poseidon.
My burning desire, my unquenched fire is
bound by my Earthly mortality, brokenhearted reality.
Oh, to be the hero Perseus for eternity would be
Heavenly, divine!
It would sooth my time as this
lovesick mere mortal.
I search endlessly for the portal.
I’m feeling quite low inside,
wishing it so,
I abide my time.

Excellent work breaking out those Wikipedia entries! I recall having read someplace that the ancient Greeks saw the Titans as being primordial gods that predated the Olympian race of gods that came after them. In fact, in most of my poems and stories that feature them I mention their divinity either outright or in a subtle manner. Though when reading this thread, I was not sure since everyone seemed convinced the Titans were not gods, so I went along with that notion... but it is great to see that what I had actually thought originally was in fact correct. Which means my poem does indeed suit this contest very well. Cool! :)

Lemmy, you don't know how happy you made me! I love mythology of anytime and always seek to know more. Pandora and Persephone were my favorites in elementary and I took painstaking time to learn about their myths. Thank you for just brightening my day:)

Selene

Selene, my light!
To bring me joy this night,
As always you do-
Forever as I watch you.
Careful to gaze,
While Apollo takes away the day,
Bringing to me,
The loveliest view of you.

Selene, you're high heaven placed,
But a shepherd boy,
Has loved your grace.
The cool nights he always waits-
To look upon the moon.

Sleep well, Endymion.
May the moon be a light,
Through those cool nights,
To guide your dreams-
Every looking at Selene.

Forever he will sleep,
Eyes open for the view.
A faithful watcher, a loving man,
Who fell for the beauty of the moon.

"For a long time it was thought that the battle of the Olympians
and the Titans represented a conquest of the Mycenaeans over the
Minoans. Yet it now seems that it might have been the Minoan gods
defeating the Mycenaean ones since the Titans seem to represent
the Mycenaen culture much better that the Olympian ones. This makes
it seem seem more like an assimilation than a conquest."

Does this qualify? as I see you have "Hades" on your list, if not I will delete.
I have added a link of the Greek Gods family tree, the Olympians are in bold, the Titans in a bluey green colour.
