World Cup
on its arrival in Qatar
Never liked sport much.
The hue and cry reminds me of
when gran would ask
to play board games with me
as well as my sibling,
and on being refused would say
‘you don’t like effort, do you, eh?’
But really I’m not sure that effort justifies
communal games of skill and chance.
Don’t get me wrong,
I take no moral stance.
My own pursuits are just as vacuous,
I’m sure. But even if I liked effort
I can’t imagine caring for
the spectacle of old FA lizards
giving sops to queers and...

The moment of my death.
The kayak is light and so is the equipment.
I carefully Swim here,
where it's quiet and smooth.
I can't swim over the rapids though.
Now it’s time to go forward again.
Getting back into the kayak.
Seeing the violence that lays ahead.
As it calls to me in loud crashes...
But somehow suddenly the current picked up,
Although I rowed back rather,
It was too late. Dragged with force
And threw to the rapids in the waterfall.
Now no options. Only forward.
No fights, no regrets.
There is no other way, there are...
I carefully Swim here,
where it's quiet and smooth.
I can't swim over the rapids though.
Now it’s time to go forward again.
Getting back into the kayak.
Seeing the violence that lays ahead.
As it calls to me in loud crashes...
But somehow suddenly the current picked up,
Although I rowed back rather,

Embracing The Aquatic - Heat 4
Summer, Saturday morning
hundreds of swimsuited kids
descend on their neighborhood,
or foes,
cabana club
and thus begins
the weekly swim meet.
Commencing with
brief warm up practice
followed by a long, tedious wait
for one's racing heat.
When at our home pool competing,
We'd spread our beach towels
on the grassy hill
overlooking the contest.
Biding our time
sunbathing, clowning around, and eating.
Mom brought chocolate covered donut sticks and boxes of strawberry Jello…our fingers and lips dyed...
