Wade
A man who I went to school with died recently. His name was Wade. He was 50 years old. He and I were both born in 1971. He was a few months older than me. I'm not going to mention his last name because it might possibly cause his loved ones grief. This makes seven people that I went to school with who are now deceased.
Let me tell you about something that happened a few days before Christmas when I was in the second grade. Every student brought a gift to school to exchange for Christmas. The gift that Wade brought was a small, crappy football that was blue. When Wade showed me the...

Speechless (2012)
The closest I ever came to love
Was with the girl 5 doors to the left
Of my old place, when I first met her
She swept me off my feet
If anyone could hear it
They would dance to the beat
Of my heart
Which paced faster than that Bolt Usain.
Some days later you was like
"Kapulwa, Hey"
And I was like
💭Damn! She knows my name! 💭
"Uh, hey!"
I couldn't say much at the time
I was too shy to make her mine
Too weak, that's true
Too scared to know
If she wanted me too
Be it flying, walking on...

Nolan grabs his belongings and leaves History Class. His high school experience had been what some would consider “normal,” but Nolan didn’t feel that way. He had been hiding something, fearing a part of himself and pushing it down. He walks through the hallways, nervous. A familiar *ding* chimes from his phone. It was Derrick.
“Hey man! You left some stuff over at my house, I was wondering when I could drop it off.”
“Derrick, I thought we went over this. I can’t let anybody know what happened.”
“Nobody’s gonna know,” Derrick replied. “Besides, you can trust...

Wallflowers
The shy and the sensitive,
that was said of us, the sort
that withers in soirees and dances
between boys and girls' schools.
There were men made for these,
they would go party-hopping
before deciding which combo
they preferred, where to preen all night.
The room would be lined with chairs,
everybody sat with their backs
against the wall -- except these men,
they do not slouch or sit, for they were
comfortable in their swagger,
the room was mapped by popularity:
a forest of the handsome corralling ...

A Rice Paper Tigress Named Gloria - Epilogue
A Rice Paper Tigress Named Gloria - Epilogue
Gloria says, “Boy, I am headed to Swarthmore with a banjo on my knee. Do you know what that means Mr. Boswell?”
“Well unless I drop out of substitute teaching and head north to the great state of Pennsylvania we may never cross paths again.”
“That is right. And the tears this brings me are the bluest of the blue. Please tell me the odds are in our favor of meeting in a restaurant here in Baton Rouge during one of my family trips home.”
“The odds are a million to one. But what are the chances of kindred...

A Rice Paper Tigress Named Gloria
This is a high school where I am a substitute teacher for young pianists, flutists, and organists who birth notes with fingers on fire. During their practice sessions, I just melt in my soma zone while they strum my heart with the music of the Gods.
The young ladies chatter like Chickadees with gentlemen in a lyceum where Bach can’t compete with green grass and blue skies. So we follow the sun onto the campus green where lasses are peonies whose windblown fragrance is a kiss for lads while I sit in a Buddha pose with the heart of a...

Classmates
He looked on as Carina jogged along the track
No matter how many times she passed him in the park,
She pretended not to notice him gazing at her
His thoughts went wild as she treaded the final lap
How he wanted to walk her to the changing room
He used to sit behind her in biology class,
But he never made a pass at her as the other boys did
He just watched her go when the bell rang
She did not know the one whose heart loved her so
If she had suspected it, he would have admitted it
The coach had subjected her to rigorous training, ...

Son-Day-School
I got some knowledge
of my own I would like
to share with the youth
Some of the values
that you were being
taught is not the truth
What you got to prove?
A little influence and
a little power to show
that you have the juice
Y'all taking up time
fighting against each other
When you should be fighting
For your Sister and Mother
Genetically modified seeds
Is what this generation breeds
Real love and real education
about real history is what the
youth needs
When you speak of...
