The August heat is hotter than other summer months
more lethal going in for the kill,
The olive trees gasp, bark crackles and leaves hang

I think of Norway. to be back to my hometown run

these pockets are empty.
perched on a barstool
head held in calloused hands
as the lamplight shines
upon a weathered face,etched
with years
vespers murmur
as the conductor wields a swizzle stick
arid martinis know the truth.

Scandinavia
Finland is the whitest country in the world
I read and according to the article in
the Sunday paper, happy in their whiteness
People in Scandinavia tend to be pale-faced
Sweden too, was white and still is, but lately
people from Muslim countries have muscled

Her body wrapped in darkness,
trying to migrate to the light.
Such a frail little body,
still trying to fight.
Shattered into pieces,
trying to tether what's left.
Bounded by the ropes of insanity,
screaming, "life was never fair!"
Whispering echos
passed through the trees
Located in the forest of despair
begging the spirits for leniency
As they all
just vacantly stare

My Aunt
A Sunday of yore is still visible
floats around my mind at the edges of memories
send signals, how much I loved her, but she
had taken the train to visit her father
A Sunday that had no worries about tomorrow
other than if Inter café closed early, I would
arrive too late
I walked in familiar streets thinking, happy thought
Suddenly, I was outside my aunt's house
she was of the festive sort, a great talker, not for her t

Through the Ages
I'm back in the streets of my childhood
no, there is no fanfare I have lived long
in a place with warmer hearts
Here, where I was born, I feel foreign
so much so I'm not sure if I remember
another child's life
1948, when bleakness was white
