samuel johnson was plagued by
creditors and ill heath didn’t make things any
easier
not to write you’d have thought
but not him

you’re all so bloody annoying ..
you bounce around like I don’t know what
and declare that everything’s
changing and you have to keep moving to keep up
and I just want to sit down
and declare that everything’s
changing and you have to keep moving to keep up
and I just want to sit down

things grow old, that once were new
nobody under fifty reads wodehouse,
they have their own
worlds apart, we are, but mine has always required a quick
snifter or two

Beat Me to a Pulp
"... a type of work produced by half-educated and wholly incompetent writers for consumption by office boys, factory girls, and other persons devoid of culture and literary taste." - R Austin Freeman, "The Art of the Detective Story"
I try for taste, you understand,
and read sonnets,
collect novels that reap plaudits.
I accept manna from God's hand.
But often my taste reflects the dark mass
of office girls and workshop boys,
and so I fly like Lucifer, alas,
to folk fiction and pulpy joys.

positively mediaeval
Ronald Welch and Henry Treece
wrote historical novels for children in
the 1950’s which were brilliant. I was nine
or ten in the 60’s when I read them
again and again, since historical
novels can only profit by not being
up to date of course, but I’m not sure
if the same can be said of myself ..

Ethereal
Ethereal
I like to make lists; Horses, titanium, ethereal
People don't understand.
I don't blame them they are just limited
They tell me there are more bacterium
In and around a person than human cells.
It makes sense in a way,
I think it is the smell.
I like to count sheep; ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
People don't understand.
Don't blame me it's just the medicine.
Maybe our bacterium do more good
Than we do, during the time of sleeping.
Doesn't matter either way,
And bacteria can't smell.

I was reading at the time
did you see the news?
no.
bad.
do you mean it was bad that I didn’t see it
or that it was simply bad news?
dunno,
I’m confused. ..

Field and Stream
In Lego-like snap tight word precision
I find that some to logic are immune
and incapable of bard concision
with their characters so rustically hewn
to typecast themselves with a bumpkin pride
that hunts and fishes the motorsport way
into a future where eloquence died
along with students in a bullet spray,
and then they only act to think and pray
and blame the horror show on mental health
because they WANT all the havoc to stay
in their rapacity for commonwealth
fueled by a hatred of those schools

an Ode to Social Media
The viral virus we've cast and caught,
A net of likes and brain-dead thought
For every child and grown soul, too,
Is drawn into the cellphone's social view.
They scroll and swipe, they tap and stare,
Consumed by screens that trap and snare.
In homes and parks, on cornered streets,
They bow to feeds and trending tweets.
Through each Facebook, X, Twit and share,
They’re Snapchat an Tinders filters unaware.
Just last week, in passing by,
I saw someone's numb dull, vacant eye.
They chase the numbers“likes” and fame

Birthday
To be or not to be
A day to celebrate me
If you were mine it could be we
Promote my book to the tee
A personal story you see
Drama, tragedy and trauma is key
Yet good moments litter this work of art like the sea
In the book I spill some tea
What matters is to what degree
My mind must be free
So buying my book is key
Assured you will laugh just agree
So Its a guarantee
Get a grasp of my reality
My number is +254727569775 I plea
This book is yours to keep.

greater concentration is needed
I don’t enjoy long poems
whereas I can read a novel
of five hundred pages or
so long as they stick to the plot
but a poem requires
greater concentration from the reader
and the poem and the writer
could have cut quite a lot

a quick look at the bloke
read somewhere that alexander
pope was one of the most quoted in the
book of most quoted quotations;
but hardly anyone today can be arsed
to read his poems, and yet everybody today
loves a bloody good quote
