rather be home with a scotch
now I sit in the pub struggling
with
half a pint of bitter and
a
sandwich instead of the roast dinner on
offer
me a night out
in the pub
and
I’ll say
yes,
although purely out
of
politeness

Today is World Sjögren's Day
World Sjögren's Day is celebrated annually on July 23rd as a day to spread awareness about this life-altering disease while also raising valuable funds for Sjögren's research, education, and advocacy.
It’s a day where patients are encouraged to use their voice to educate those around them and to help spread the message that Sjögren's is a serious, systemic, and prevalent disease. And it’s meant to put a face on the millions of people living with Sjögren's or who suffer with symptoms but who are not yet diagnosed.

EXCEPT FOR THIS SONG THE CRICKETS SING (Jamaica Beach beach house, 10-6-1991; 1st poem I wrote after moving back to TX)
well here i am

Last Sex
Her doctor looked at us both after Susan whispered the question. “Yes, you can still be intimate together. But think of life in terms of weeks from this point on. Treasure each moment.”
Susan looked at me with redness in her eyes. I felt like crying but didn’t.
We acted on the doctor’s orders that very night. Our bedroom was silent except for our breaths, mingling in this space that was ours alone for the last three years. As we made love, it was gentle, a whisper of what we once had. Her eyes were closed.
I placed myself over her carefully and tenderly...

The Black Pond
Trapped from the start
She tried to reach for the stars
When she was held behind the bars
Hoping to see a glimpse of the sparks
With a flick of her wand
She stumbled across the pond
Wondering what was lurking
Underneath the motionless surface
She was so intrigued as it spoke
And made shapes in different sizes
After revealing its secrets
It sunk back into the darkness
The pond gently lured her in
To see the great mysteries
Beyond her imagination
Along with the greatest transformations
She tried to reach for the stars
When she was held behind the bars
Hoping to see a glimpse of the sparks
With a flick of her wand
She stumbled across the pond
Wondering what was lurking

Catch of the Day
I should have won a prize:
a giant ugly lime green teddy bear perhaps
My aim was flawless
I filled the cup
cleanly
perfectly
only one drop on the side
(which I of course politely tissued off before putting the labeled container in the little window)
After the act was completed
I thought of the title
Catch of the Day
And there is no greater purpose than that
for this dopey poem.

Vomit
Words are such disgusting little things
I hate how I vomit them
How painful it is to retch them onto the page
Pages upon pages of useless words
How they clump and chunk themselves together so randomly
I wish my words were water drops
Could drip down the page
To find each other, swallow, become one
Instead, these nasty words
Sit like sick
Viscous and chunked in the bowl of my skull
I can feel them even now
Little whiskers brushing against the bones of my forehead
Bouncing around the bony plates and sutures ...

used to like walking
frightened of going out, of falling over and over again I open the front door and then close it again and again and decide not to go out, I’d so much rather stay in

The Mysterious Sickness
Bring your beauty onto me
Mysterious and distant
I can only imagine to see
We discovered our magic together
Mileage should never stop our love
Your valued more then any buried treasure
One day i will arrive, when you least suspect
Surprise!! Surprise!!
Let's make love, take off your dress
Your looks and appeal are stunning to my eyes
Your body, so beautifully developed
So sexy honey, I tell no lies
Days & weeks go by
Personality isn't what I like
A few more days, I'm saying goodbye

Fungus Anyone
Fungus creeping under my toes
Athlete's Foot everyone
In case you didn't know
Was showering at some flea-bag motel
This dopey girl chose the place
Wanted to fuck, even if it looked like hell
Itching, burning, peeling skin
She pisses me off
I'm going to rub it on her chin
Toes, number 4 & 5
Have it the worst
This is because of my sex drive
Peroxide cures from what I read
It's a safer remedy
Don't want it to spread
Just remember girls as I said before
You piss me off
I'll stick my fungus...

germs and flannelette pjs
We've had the flu
and you haven't kissed me
in two weeks
and I don't give a fuck
if we're sick
I just want you to kiss me
I've made a new habit
of hugging you around the waist
my face pressed against your arse
it started as a joke
and now it's just a different way
of saying I want to be close to you
I finger your flannelette pyjamas
and kiss the shoulder seam
wishing my lips could find skin
but you don't notice
as you play games on your phone
and tell me to please not cough on you...

The Final Resolution
I was discouraged at therapy that my face was hideous
No one knew a sinner unless they looked at their father
The mother of your sons biological abortion
Like a piston
Like a slug waiting to eat salt
Disintegration of the molten force underneath your skin
Go ahead, growl!
Your magical in the eyes of a horse that gave you life
That horse is actually a walrus
A nasty, disgusting, rancid creation that lives on Fruit Loops, Spam and dog biscuits
Her tits look like something from a Picasso painting
Drill a square box onto her forehead ...
