Middens are piles of oyster shells
left by migrants from the perennial winter
of the northern ice age
when the woolly mammoth lumbered
across the cool grasslands of Louisiana.
The nomads had no home
but the memory of a forest
might stir a tear
as they traversed the pelagic land-sea.
The camel species began
far from the Sahara in North America
where they migrated south
in riderless caravans
with their humps silhouetted
by the setting sun
to lead the grass-people to water and...

January
January lingers, cold and slow
I wonder how you are, where the streets go.
do the days treat you kind?
I wish I could walk with you, leave no step behind.

you people scare me
you people scare me,
being either bigger or
stronger, or more violent, or simply
more confidant
in yourselves I see
nothing of me
being either bigger or
stronger, or more violent, or simply
more confidant
in yourselves I see
nothing of me

humanity
my soul hurt, I could feel my brothers and sisters ache
it was like a constant pain that throbbed in the background
and I carry it year in and out
a heaviness of feeling that I could put down for a moment
then it was yoked to my soul again
every cut, every burn, callous words and injustices
when a being hurt I hurt with them
anxiety would build and the pressure would start
such a powerful feeling, being connected to these old souls
I bear their burden with them
never seeing their faces but knowing their pain intimately ...
it was like a constant pain that throbbed in the background
and I carry it year in and out
a heaviness of feeling that I could put down for a moment
then it was yoked to my soul again
every cut, every burn, callous words and injustices
when a being hurt I hurt with them

such a powerful feeling, being connected to these old souls
