“Wonderful Things!”
A caravan of camels wove their way
‘Cross seas of dunes of sand and mystery.
The latest season Carter led the way,
The Valley of the Kings, and history.
Carnarvon paid for every spade of dirt
( A friend who, Carter excavations, backed ).
George Edward Stanhope Molyneux Herbert,
5th Earl of Carnarvon, to be exact.
The two men who’d been introduced in ‘08,
Enthusiastic, just like freshmen chums,
Spent seasons of an Egypt winters’ slate
As wives would shop for fakes in Cairo slums.
But Howard...

Rockhollow Series: Destiny
Title: Destiny
Twenty Six of Thirty
Unique Words: One Hundred and Forty-Six
#NaPoWriMo19
The rain she heaves as if she knows
I need to watch from the window,
my mind gives no hoots
to the body's pain, I've always been that way.
Thinking beyond here lately - of gifting
something all together, full bodied and rich with worthiness
to the ether, my daughter, to you and I.
I want to give Rockhollow to it, let the thanks of it leak
pleasantly through pages
as valium to anxiety. ...

lives of the poets ..
bloke In the pub says
he can still remember
samuel johnson
sitting in this very chair
and so I ask him how old
does he think he is?
he says well I should think
by now he's dead ..

Village Threshing-Rock
Right up close
on the south side of our house
lies the village threshing-rock
held in common, owned by no-one -
though no longer used
for its original purpose,
it carries unknown histories
dating back centuries
holding stories of a stage
in making bread.
Vertical integration. From farm to table.
Three hours ago it had a heap of my lenha* on it
so I got up early to wheelbarrow and stack it under cover
before it outstayed its welcome
before it got too hot to work

History Waits
History waits a long game
before turning cards held to breast
stating those who will ascend
along with fallen then condemned
past transgressions are held up
to the probing of insight
no longer hidden in plain sight
now visible to the light
the shadows will no longer hide
violations once thought right
the complacent put aside
when decrees are fully plied
conservatives in the dark
those concerned to hold the past,
who fight against the tide of time
while holding to a tarnished life

The Flood
pyramids in China
Indonesia too
pyramids in Egypt
and too in Peru
pyramids from ancient times
when the ice did melt
as civilization crumbled
and everywhere was felt
a solar flare, or asteroid
which touched Earth in a flash
Zep Tepi and Atlantis
vanished in a splash
the northern ice sheet melted
the sea rose overnight
only the survivors
struggled so we might
one day reawaken
with another chance
to leave the world a better place
in lila's cosmic dance

Pirate 1 - Tortuga
quatern
We’ll make Tortuga by tonight
If wind this fair shall carry on
The pirates’ refuge held by might
Against the crown’s own lackeyed pawns
The crew will mutiny unless
We’ll make Tortuga by tonight
Our raid was cursed with no success
Jamaica Sloop ran from our fight
No prey since seen, a long fortnight
With rations slim, we’re heading home
We’ll make Tortuga by tonight
And drink our fill by sand and foam
This style of life is ending soon
All buccaneers now share my plight

time means nothing
things might look
different over time
but underneath
they're just the same

Twisted Dreamer
I tip my hat to you, for I am the twisted dreamer you didn’t seek
But before you dismiss me, please give me a chance to speak
Lend me your ear as no other as I may spin you a tale of proportions epic
You may want to get comfortable, this will take more than a sec
If you so please let me set the stage of this wonderful tale
Of how we were so destined to meet and how so destined to fail
In what matters most and what become of our very ways
Of what once was, and is no longer, that of our glory days

Hunting: The Cherokee Way
( Tennessee, Georgia, the Carolinas )
After abstaining sex four days,
Fasting, and purification,
Prayers to wind, river, mountain gods
Asking for a successful hunt.
To listen while one is hunting;
The thrash of hooves, a rhythmic brush,
In time with pheasant wings beating,
And standing with the stag laid down.
To ask the gods to forgive him,
To thank the spirit, drink its blood
To harness of its strength & speed.
To take the meat of deer and fowl,
The fish, the...

Echoes of Old 'Hollow
Title: Echoes of Old 'Hollow
Ten of Thirty
Unique Words: Eighty
#NaPoWriMo19
King fern tumbles up from a golden clump
of matted roots, years old, protruding earth.
Chilled air smells fresh - holy, green rain - deep soil bounces with life.
Old cherry wears his blossom as medals
of energy reserves he's protected over-Winter.
Full stream sings her busiest song, a sparrow flits across raised beds for worms.
This Spring runs upon a history of promise that may last the Summer through
- with any luck!
