Neon epilogue
The clock’s teeth grind,
against your broken smile,
time's brittle spine,
hands tick-tock-tapping like the nervous cough of God.
The city hums a hymn of gasoline prayers,
each flickering streetlight a confession undone.
I saw a man in a window’s shattered grin,
his shadow whispered, "Can you save, but nobody here.”
The pavement drank his bloodshot dreams,
left his soul dangling from a rusted payphone cord,
Outside a shattered phonebooth.

clutching your golden mirage,
your designer faith,

I fail to amuse you
or make you think
when I was mad as a hatter
I could write you intrigued
color me hurt
my sanity is precarious
I hang on tightly
having clawed my way back from the brink
did you know there is a price for genius?
I fell hard into madness
clinging to the pen
I wrote out my delusions
careful not to talk out loud about them
lest they throw me in the psych ward
5150 a danger to self and others
my voices even helped ...
or make you think

Broken Rhythm
I'm not sure
what I expected,
but I know
what I wanted.
Simply
just
to be
with you
and laugh
and feel
that sense
of trueness.
When you looked
at me
it made me feel
so ten feet tall
and when you
walked away
from me
I felt so very small.
And now,
so many years ahead,
at night alone,
perhaps
in bed
I feel
that's still
in play
that even when
your eyes avert, ...

Real Men Caffeinate
I ask her, “Why do you scowl
Every time you serve me?
When your eyes close
Those styled eyelashes point down
As if I’d made a faux pas
Like did you bleach your hair
To make it so frizzy?”
She replies, “You have committed
The cardinal sin for a man in my eyes.
You are one of my decafe customers.
I can tolerate that from women
Females after all are naturally perked
For we are of the catty breed but

It was supposed to be an escape
roaming in the wild with poets
It was beautiful at first
unhindered by realities
taking the small joys
in the written word
connecting with the like-minded
The point of being here
was to relish in the alternate life
inject some excitement
into a rather bland existence
I walked the path of monogamy
for the most part,
so this place
allowed for something a little more
even if only in mind
But in connections
comes demands
