Unsung Heroes Part V: Felipe (dad)
You were born five years before the Spanish Civil War that would see your father exiled.
Language came later to you than your little brother Manuel. And you stuttered for a time.
Unlike those who speak incessantly with nothing to say, you were quiet and reserved.
Your mother mistook shyness for dimness, a tragic mistake that scarred you for life.
When your brother Manuel died at the age of three from meningitis, you heard your mom
Exclaim: “God took my bright boy and left me the dull one.” You were four or five.
You never forgot those words. How could you?...

School Lessons
I've been thinking of all the things I learnt at school. Pythagorean theorem I haven’t needed to find the missing side length of a right triangle to find my way but being taught to be kind and considerate even when it’s hard would have been a useful tool to put in my kit bag ready for physical and emotional exercises.
Also to find courage when you need it most whilst lying to your mother when she is dying but telling her everything is going to be fine. You know I did that for the greater good to ease her pain but was its courage that spoke of my weaknesses to appease. I would have...

A Small Piece of Good
Crazy how quickly the darkness can come flooding back in
No matter how close in reach, I can never get a win
Its been days of highs and then the voices begin
Popping this thin bubble of serenity like a pin
Its like I need to believe all the negative and the hate
So words of condemnation take on extra weight
They say Im a piece of shit and I offer no debate
It causes me to withdraw into a hell that I create
I want to do good but somehow it always turns out bad
I want to make people happy yet they always end up sad
I want...

AS LIFE'S SHELL SPIRALS TIGHTER STILL (1990's; Galveston Island, Texas)
as life s shell spirals
tighter
ever more tightly around me
with each passing day and night
my life itself and i
both seem and feel
to be coiling in a spiral
deeper
ever more deeply
towards some mysterious
unforeseen
perhaps unseeable
unknown end
which lies in silent stealthy wait
both before behind and beyond me
trapped deeply somewhere within
some long held
subconsciously buried ...

CHISELS & SHOVELS
Still counting the oscillating figures
Cause some blue men have hairy triggers
Sanctioned hitters for the States
Increasing at astronomical rates
Other's will debate this validity
Funny thing is, none look like me
We don't see out of the same orbitals
They always foresee it as justifiable
That fact's more reliable than a Sunrise
Dead men tell no tales nor open any eyes
Therein lies the rub-a-dub-dub historically
It's the same old song like rhymes from nurseries
Repeat after me; "I feared for my...

Sniper Files - The General's Family
The moon cast a ghostly glow over the deserted street as Private Ivan Mercer stood in the shadows, his heart hammering against his ribs like a desperate prisoner. He gripped the cold metal of his sidearm, the weight of his orders bearing down on him like an unbearable burden.
"There is no spirit," he muttered to himself, his voice barely a whisper in the stillness of the night. "There is only flesh, and it will vanish completely when its time on earth is done."
He closed his eyes, trying to shut out the images that flooded his mind—the faces of the...

Memory One: Peace, Serenity, and Sorrow
I look into the distance, and I see the ancient days reflected,
Other worlds, other times, other ages now lost to all records.
I look within, I see the place that is most securely protected,
From within to beyond, to a paradise filled with songs of birds.
A singular oasis, where in other flesh we oft went to feel peace!
Those of my house knew not of our secret meetings, lost love.
Yet I oft did sneak away, to bask in the wonder of your company,
Beneath the moons of a world no eyes see...
