I was still reeling, feeling feelings from the day before
Today some alternates are celebrating my father’s birthday
“You’ve got to help your daughter” this time TOTO advised
“She might commit murder so you better not go astray”

The Starry Night

“In how many universes have I died already?” I asked TOTO
“That’s somewhat classified” he replied as he handed me a file
“He’s a truck driver heading up north but he forgot something
You need to go into his house, he hasn’t been home in a while”
“I haven’t been home in a while” I said feeling a bit frustrated
“I don’t know whether I’m coming or going or dreaming again”
“We understand” TOTO replied, “but you have to do this quickly
You’ll pick up a box then teleport to his destination by 6am”

The HOTLINE

“You’ll need to talk to your alternate, indirectly” TOTO said
“What do you mean?” I asked noticing his grim robotic voice
“There have been untimely occurrences across many worlds
And we believe you’ll alternate in the next will make a bad choice”
It was 11:21pm when the portal opened in a small dark hallway
Right away I felt an ominous heavy burden for this mission
The room down the hallway was a call center of some sort
A suicide hotline where people were there to help and listen
I gave the supervisor...

“TOTO I’m tired, I’m sleepy and my feet hurt” I told my handler
“That’s on you” he said “you’ve been up for over a day and a half
You can have a couple of hours of rest here because in the morning
You are going to save the livelihood of your friends and staff”
As I walked through the dimly hallway past many other stations
Portals opened up as other people traveled in between realms
TOTO took me to a breakroom for those tired and weary travelers

On the fourth night of my secret epic parallel universe travel
TOTO sent me to a world where I’d been a successful writer
“Be careful” he said as the lines across his monitor face frowned
“Here you are very cunning, so this mission may be an all nighter”
“What’s the deal with him, why am I coming here?’ I asked
“For a while he’s been going through a bout of depression
In his latest book he’ll subliminally write a chapter on suicide
And many of his readers will kill themselves over their obsession”

When the portal in the shape of a blue liquid sphere appeared
Thinking I was still dreaming from the night before I stepped through
