Sometimes I wonder why God kept me here instead of you.
I’ve built a life I never imagined I could, and still, there are those nights.
Nights I sit with the shadow of your absence and wonder why.
Why do I get to laugh when your voice has gone silent?
Why does happiness feel like a betrayal when I still miss you?
Have I earned this second chance, or is that even how it works?

I found forever in the ether
called your blue eyes salvation
and pretended we could be God
like we were capable of using
that kind of power for anything other
than mutual self destruction

Unwanted Double Date
Another year, the calendar turns,
Still silent, where your laughter learns
To echo in the empty air.
Today, a birthday,oh, the joy you'd share,
A happy day, you're two...bright new start,
But grief still tightly, clenches to my heart.
December eighth, a dreaded double date,
Your birth and your death, a cruel, harsh fate.

Natural Healing
I miss the park
The dragonflies flying across
the bullrushes, and water lillies
The beautiful array
Of a myriad butterflies
My heart, beats with their every wingbeat
Trees that stretch out so high
They could sweep the clouds away
The delight of seeing the Egyptian Geese
Watching the magic of their mating dance
Wings outstretched, upon the old bowling green
And myself only ten feet away from this display
I see this, and am transfixed, and enchanted
I remember saying that
"Who needs a doctor for well being

time howls its silence
I shivered in a blanket of
cobwebbed emotions
as a day passed
with just a
scattered light
through the holes
in my soul
and it felt like
teeth clenching
in darkness
so honest
it showed
nothing
It felt like that
like that
it felt like alarms
blaring danger
on all sides as
the wind howled
like a raving thing
thirsting for
the spare copper
in my veins
yet less survivable

we had a plan
reservations made
in the works for months
bringing your sweetie to you
she made a bucket list
& you were at the top
a homecoming...of sorts
revisit all the old haunts
going to Morey's & get your favorite fish
those special cheeses you always used to get
A&W with New York Vanilla ice cream floats
just like the old days...in better times
before everything changed in life
we were coming...I swear
but the universe had other ideas
so we had to pivot quickly
