"I'm a Drug Addict."
Do you ever just sit in your room
And say to yourself out loud,
"I’m a drug addict. I’m addicted to drugs.”
We never do. We make jokes instead--
Calling ourselves junkies, which was meant to hurt us..
But we chose to own instead.
You'll never here a junkie say,
“I’m a fucking drug addict and I can’t function, breathe, exist--
I’m addicted and I can’t quit.”
Sometimes your secrets don’t seem real until you say them aloud, knowing--
You can never shove them back in.
Go ahead, say it—
Admit you’re a drug addict.
How does that feel?

Wow! That's some true shit. At almost eighteen months sober I still own that 'junkie' word (as you well know. lol.) But drug addict? Not when I was still fucked up. No fucking way! Now everytime I speak in a 12 step meeting I say 'My name's Christian and I'm an alcoholic and addict' and it doesn't bother me one bit.
I love your writing. It brings me back to my days of being a strung out junkie (shit, I did it again)...I mean addict which is a good reminder for me. Rock on Wikipedia'Junkie'!

i can say junkie today and it not be a self hate, just a fact. I do not hate my addiction today. I hate the free will choice I made for years to continue to use knowing I was a junkie. I embrace junkie like left hand or big toe, its just a part of me. Thankfully today Junkie is an accountablity, it is a reminder to mysel of the lie: "its ok to us again." my profile picture hangs on the front door of my house to remind me every day that i have a choice today I did not have while i was using.

I still can't say it..but I do hate myself. I got slapped too. I really like this though...quite the eye opener.
