A Pessimist's Lament
I see a world
covered in scars;
beaten by dictators
and filled with tears.
I see a world
filled with chaos
identified by catastrophe
and governed by lies.
I see a world
honoured by corruption
broken by the truth
and crying when hope is offered.
I see a world
lamenting the success of those truly honourable
praising slaughterers
and blessing death.
I see a world and some say I am blind.
I see buildings. Sky-scrapers.
Orderly death sentences served to
families and to friendship.
Envy eating away at the insides of people
afraid to say what they feel
for fear of losing what they want.
I see no world.
I see an abyss.
I see a hole where people fall when they embrace
the system of control
handed to us at the click of a button.
They say I should see possibility and progress
but I am a pessimist
and I only see the world.
