Carry The Fire
Most people didn't live long
After the buttons were pressed and the bombs went off
I was just a meek child on the road, I was weak
The world taught me how to be strong
Mom was struggling, I watched her, beginning to fray
She went ahead and ended all her suffering
When the bullet left the chamber, it filled her head with lead
She showed me the only way to get away
You kept me alive
You fended of cannibals and nearly avoided raiders
Even though every day you struggled more, you always protected me
You taught me how to survive
Bad men slaughter whole communities so they can have a meal
But not us we are the good guys and we don't eat people
Only kill when we have to, never do we steal
We carry the fire for humanity
On the road we stayed
Traveling south towards the ocean
Water gave us hope there would be other families there, but then
You died
I was sleeping on the beach by myself
When I woke I discovered a thief had stolen everything we had
So now I sit beside you, gazing out to sea and wondering
If on the other side of the ocean, theirs another little boy sitting beside his father
