Two swans

Once there were two swans
who liked to stay on a certain pond
from spring to autumn each year

they swam side by side
and passerbys would sometimes
steal a lucky glance
of their necks intwined

never could they be apart
or stray too far from one another
they would not exist without the other

but sadly one day
the frost came early
and the pond froze over
within one night

one swan died from the cold
the other as always
stayed by its side
when the morning came
the farmer whos pond they stole
was roused by its awful cries

all the neighbors came out to help
to try and save the swan
from a slow icy death
but try as they might
it would not leave its lovers side

it kept flying back
because it could not bear
to say goodbye
there nothing more
the people could do but
sit there and watch it slowly die

i'm reminded of that tragedy
everytime i pass that pond
and a tear forms in my eye
but i will not let myself cry
i will remember
that fateful day i passed them by
their beaks touching

As if in a kiss
long necks arched back
to form the shape
of the heart they once shared
thats how i choose to remember
the two swans on a frozen pond
