Cheating by the Pool
I dream our life
back together on a rosy bed
Deranged sheets
crumpled with love
the wraith of a marriage
sourer than sin
It's true
she was always the best
at kissing away
all my cobwebs
covering the pool at night
or tending to strays on a whim
And those sweeter aspects
pervade indelibly still
enslave me helpless
in moments bound and gagged
with the pluck
of a jealous heart's string
But now her music
ripples without sound
she floats
face down
playing footsie with the leaves
poor echoes of limp hair
bobbing
I snuggle with our memories
curl guts into a ball
while strange new thunder
tugs hard at the dregs of my soul
the empty chill of forever
bleeding the seeds of deceit
If only she'd been smarter
slipped out later
acted more discreet
Maybe if I'd gone to bed earlier
taken one more drink
or a pill to help me sleep
Maybe her midnight games
with the gardener
wouldn't have been the last time
I ever watched
my prettiest darling bitch
enjoy her swim
