Broken Reflection

I plodded down the street one day
It rained quite heavily.
I turned and saw along my way,
A woman's eyes on me.

Her eyes were full of grief and pain,
And yet she tried to smile.
She was all soaked up in the rain
She stood there for a while.

"What's wrong?" I asked, "Why do you cry?"
"I'll help you if I can."
She looked at me, and from her eye
A tear, and down it ran.

"I'm fine," she said, "But I feel sad,"
"My heart is broken still."
"But please don't mind, it's not that bad,"
"Although I feel so ill."

I touched her hand, it was so cold.
She looked so pale and gray.
"Please tell me now, what's left untold."
"I'll help you right away."

The woman then began to speak.
Her voice was soft and faint.
Her sorrow made her feel so weak,
The cause of such restraint!

"When I was young," She said to me,
"I prayed to God above."
"That He would make my heart to see.
I prayed I'd fall in love."

She sighed and then continued on.
A tremble in her voice.
"And now, you know I've met a man,"
"He is my perfect choice."

"Well then, that's great!" I said in glee.
"An answer to your prayer!"
The woman, though, she shook her head.
"But now, that's where I err!"

"You see, when I began to pray
For someone I could love,
I did forget one thing to say,
One thing I thought not of."

"To make me fall, was what I want,
One part I did forget.
To make me love, just the RIGHT ONE.
So now, I do regret."

"For now, my heart is captured by
A heart which is not mine.
He has a lovely kid, and wife.
I need to draw the line."

After she spoke, I felt a tear
Fall slowly down my cheek.
It hurt to love someone so dear,
Yet not allowed to speak.

"I cannot comfort you," I said.
"But one thing I do know.
The road of life is tough to tread,
But it will make you grow."

She smiled as I bid her goodbye.
But she won't let me pass.
I stared, surprised! With an outcry,
It was a looking glass.
