The Sanguine Fields
- The Sanguine Fields -
An Allegory of Life’s Journey
Across the sanguine fields I strode, my steed long dead,
Unable to carry me beyond this realm of terrible dread…
Alas for he, that noble steed, which perished in the mire.
I must stride on, lest I succumb and like him forever tire!
The grass was stained with blood from wars of long ago,
And from the eastern desolation, a vacant wind did blow.
Go no farther, it cried, but alas for me that I must go on!
For the way was harsh and hot, beneath the burning sun.
Soon enough, a road both rough and rude I did discover,
And my sandaled feet took to it like the arms of a lover…
Aching for some civilized feeling, some hint of soft mercy.
I could never turn back for I was set upon grand destiny,
Though we are: the path we travel, as well the destination.
I knew this not at the time for I knew much consternation,
And imagined my way to be arduous, my road very grim!
That was what my life was like when my path I did begin.
Vultures spied me from on high, hungering and thirsting…
Whilst I pictured brigands in the hills, so sneakily listening.
It was then I saw the girl child in white, her voice in song,
Beckoning for me to lay aside my burdens grown so long.
I cast away my fears and woes, and followed her hither…
Away from the bloody fields where plants die and wither.
I became that girl I had followed, learning all her mystery,
Now the sanguine fields are long gone, in ancient history.
