History Question. *Creative Thinking
Imagine you are one of the following:
Unemployed Worker
Single man or woman
Child living in a middle or working class family
farmer
wealthy businessman
Explain how the Great Depression has affected you.
Write your account as if it were an entry in your diary. It can have an informal tone, so you need not use complete sentences, though you may if you wish.
We didn't get to eat again last night,
mom says we can't.
We have to save our money until pop gets home.
He's been gone for a while now,
sometimes I wonder if he's ever coming back
if he's found somewhere else, with more money.
He told us he was leaving to ride the trains, and see the world.
When he was gone, mom told us that he was going to find us money.
I don't think my brother understands, we had money.
We'd both seen it before, a couple coins now and again.
But he don't see the connection between staying alive and having money like the rest of us.
Mom just got a job as a domestic she told us she's looking after people.
We don't get to see her much either, and she leaves at night a lot.
The other week we had bread for the first time since my birthday.
We each got about a fist worth, and we had some water to wash it down.
that's been the best eats we've had in almost a year.
Where are you pa? why haven't you come home yet?
We're all waiting for you.
I see the people drive in their cars with nice suits.
Why do they have money?
Why did he have to go so far if other people here have money?
Ma says there's an election coming soon.
The man in charge isn't listening to anyone who needs money, and he won't help us.
Most of the town is voting for a new leader, and there's campaigns going on.
We'll be going down tomorrow, to hear about it
and maybe we won't be poor anymore.
I've got to get to bed now or ma's gonna have my hide.
I'll write when I can.
