When I was young
I would lay still
In my grandmother's back yard
Facing upward
Watching the clouds
Momentarily
I would close my eyes
And I could swear
I felt the earth move
I would swear it
to my cousins
alongside of me
Did you feel that?
They never felt it.
Was this a childish fabrication?
Or was it my first sign of love?
My love for the dirt
Under my nails
For the cushion of the grass
The ease of a smile
Momentarily
Such a love I have thought was rare
As I've grown into something else
Into someone else
I've walked an ambivalent road
Eventually I found myself
Finding you
You would kiss me and
Momentarily
I would close my eyes
And I could swear
I felt the earth move
...and the ease of my smile
Was this a childish fabrication?
Or was it my first sign of love?
I would lay still
In my grandmother's back yard
Facing upward
Watching the clouds
Momentarily
I would close my eyes
And I could swear
I felt the earth move
I would swear it
to my cousins
alongside of me
Did you feel that?
They never felt it.
Was this a childish fabrication?
Or was it my first sign of love?
My love for the dirt
Under my nails
For the cushion of the grass
The ease of a smile

Or was it my first sign of love?
