To the Woods

I danced with a bear
when I was young
we tripped through dreams
and drank the sun
ate strawberry cake
in our Sunday best
jumped in puddles
stole eggs from nests

I always knew the time
without a clock
and the names for things
I never forgot
What a naughty boy
such wilful ways
it's a wonder I
survived those days

Now I look back
with no regret
but I'm still convinced
there's better yet
The only thing
I'm sad to say
there ain't much time
to go and play
