Downtrodden Day
(Winner of "Show Your Sole" competition)
Cracks in the pavement,
Black spots of old gum.
Red bricks of a drive way,
Mud in the corner of the lawn.
Front door step,
A pause by peeling paint.
A clack and a shuffle.
Back down to the pavement.
Along some low shrubs
Crazing paving, dark in the rain.
Passing an empty flower bed.
Who left a skipping rope here?
Another clack.
A thump of a big envelope
Landing inches away,
On the other side of the door.
Strides become yards,
Yards become miles.
Still the endless pounding
As the hours stomp by.
In my wake I sense
The mutters and groans.
More bills, less love letters,
A postman’s sole beyond repair.
