A Very Modern Affair

Fifty years of marriage, childhood sweethearts so they say
Glassy eyed I can still remember our wonderful wedding day.
No big church just the registrar a few friends my wife and me,
Staying married for all those years its love that holds the key.

As I sit and look at photos past in such a happy home
Something stirs deep inside then the ringing of the phone,
My son’s voice tells me all of the news, of how his daughter gives her views
The more that’s said she just won’t listen, one vital thing I know is missing.

I’m moving out she shouts with joy, to the next town & live with my boy
The boyfriend seems to be okay but youngsters know it all these days,
Life is easy so they think discussed in a bar with shots they drink
Great ideas to rent a flat the drinks keep flowing they sit and chat.

I’ll bring my kid you get on great he needs a dad and I need a mate,
She visits me with all the news but doesn’t seem to hear my views
Don’t worry Gramps it’s all planned out I quietly listen and quash my doubts,
Then so excited she has to go, around a flat she will be shown.

All goes well for the next two years but it can’t go on and ends in tears
The little boy now calls him dad, the only father he ever had,
The boyfriend leaves she want’s too much no give and take she loses touch
It seems the child is scarred but must, learn that’s life, learn to adjust.

My lovely wife of fifty years and when I wake I shed a tear
A wife, a friend, a soul mate too, someone so special that was you,
I think of her every day its twelve years since she passed away
As grandad sits in twilight years with his thoughts he holds so near.

Looking from this grand old age in modern life I see such rage
Some youngsters just don’t understand that deep down love is not a plan,
It’s rare to find a true life friend you’ll love until the very end
Someone to cherish and share your life, with so much love, I miss my wife.
