Risk and Ruin

Some fish have
as a part
of their own
fishing apparatus,
a tiny thing
that might wiggle
or in some other way
draw another fish in
as an inquisitive resource
for food
by tricking it
into thinking
the appendage is a worm
of some kind.

Just so
the con man
uses his own
hook, line,
and sinker program
to correct the thoughts
of those
who might otherwise
just walk on by.

How are we
to know
that the politicians
are not using
clever bait
to reel us in
and while we
are proclaiming
their virtues
they are themselves
planning our demise,
one shard
of glass
and sip
of anti-freeze
at a time
until at last
they pickle us
and use our bodies
to stand on
just so they
can see
over the hill
and into the next valley
they are seeking
to conquer?
