Poverty Mentality

Who knows what great art might produced
If we were willing to suffer more?
But time is such an ungracious task master.
The fear of being alone,  the worries of sleeplessness,
The Cushing sense that failure's barking dog
Might wake the dead and alarm the living.
What in the hell might we do if we lived
The authentic life without its numbing accesses
And held ourselves to only such as we might find
Beneath the wheel of some sad wreck
The charm of which is only in its rusted dents
And living is a shattered patch of cardboard dreams?
