Premonition (Chapter 6)

It was raining that night. The rain pounding against the white washed building, hundreds of stories high. The water forming streams that gashed from the mouths of the stone gargoyles from up above. Lightning snaked its way across the blackened sky as the thunder continued to unleash its fury.

The boys made their way across the rotting wooden planks as they stepped down from the train. It was at least a 5-hour ride to the academy in the freezing cold. As usual, all of them chose to overcrowd a single cart, not because of the logic of using body heat to stay warm, but their fear of the dark and unknown. In other words, their fear of Syn.

Under his cloak, he clutched his knapsack to his chest. In his dreams, he had tried to recreate his visions of her. The only person in his life to crack and maybe even to melt his frozen heart. Always, she remained wrapped in shadows, only her delicate silhouette dancing against the ever fading light. Long silk-like hair, smooth skin, soft lips, light reflecting off her sad; wet eyes. Her arms, gracefully wrapped around him, entwining her long dainty fingers into his hair; but what he missed most of all was the warmth of her embrace. Her breath against his skin. How tight she would clutch at him at the beginning of each dream.

Rough sketches against a forest-like background, pictures of a girl with bangs covering her eyes and her lips parting, almost as if to speak. Her silhouette facing a window as if she was waiting for him. As of late, those were his most prized possessions; his ONLY prized possessions.

No longer was he simply drifting his life away, awaiting the day he was to repay his debt to his demonic guardian. A mere asset to the dead. A silent puppet.

Syn was the last to enter, lagging behind as he clutched at his precious knapsack. There was something familiar about this place, he thought. The intricate detail carved upon each pillar and also the magnificent marble floors that were so well polished that it was almost as if you were standing on a mirror. Never had he been outside the Northern Lights, yet he it seemed as if he knew the place by heart. He let the others walk ahead of him. His classmates chose to ignore his very existence, making his getaway fairly easy.

Lets see...Second door to the right, across the south east corridor, up the stairs and to the glass door that was hidden by vines. If he was right, then his dreams were not JUST mere illusions...Pen-knife in hand, he ripped through the hanging foliage. What he was doing was actually that of making his way through an overgrown greenhouse. An abandoned one at that. He remembered coming here once, holding his beloved in his arms, their shadows sewn together in the moonlight.

His patience grew thin as he continued slicing through the miniature jungle, birds and small animals fleeing before this strange intruder. He stopped, however, when the jungle seemed to break into an oasis before him, right smack in the middle of the greenhouse. Above him, the moon in all its glory shone its light through the cracked patches of glass where the plants weren't able to overshadow.

Call it what you want, whether it was a mere coincidence, spirit wandering, or fate, for he was now more sure than ever that he knew this place well enough to cause some speculation, not that he'd actually been there before. For the first time in his life, he felt his heart race with excitement. To have even the slightest inkling that his dreams of late were possibly real, that SHE was real, made his mind spin uncontrollably.

His heart raced uncontrollably under the moon's veil. He was so sure. Too sure in fact that it was almost scary. Her frigid movement even IF graceful, still showed. Dainty fingers graced the coarse wood thats been hacked at, below him. That look of longing, those far away eyes, the very lip that was constantly bit to fight back tears...it had to be her.

If he had taken off his cloak, would she back away? Would she have ran in fear? Those thoughts filled his heart with ice as soon as he looked at her, peacefully asleep to the rain's lullaby. Because of this strange person, Syn the silent puppet, was now experiencing things he'd never felt before. One of them was the fear of losing something that meant the world to him. The other was losing the ONLY person that had ever needed and cared for him.

He left as silently as he'd entered. Protecting her from the freezing cold was his own black velvet hooded cloak. With both his heart and stomach twisted in knots, he went to get away from his greatest risk. What if she wasn't the one? What if she wasn't real? What if this was truly all a dream? Thought after merciless thought plundered his mind that night. When he had finally fallen asleep, the rain had stopped.

He dreamt of her that night. She was in a room filled with fine china and silk tablecloths, which her hand teasingly brushed against. Her frame was caved in, as if the years of pain had finally done her in. Syn though just couldn't contain himself as he approached her from behind. His well toned arms were wrapped around her in a second while his lips gently graced her neck. All his frustration and worries were vented out in a single steamy kiss. His tongue plundered her mouth mercilessly but slowly returned to something more compassionate when he finally got over his trivial fear. All that mattered right then and there was that they were together.

However, it was as it always was. She was gone when he awoke, but this time he was rudely awakened by one of the academy's many teachers that found him asleep against a pillar. Apparently, thats where he had actually spent the night.
