Brain Injury Awareness
Brains are keys,
Keys to life.
What happens if those keys are broken,
Or damaged?
What happens to that life?
The key controls every movement, every sound.
When our key breaks can we speak?
Can we move around?
Our Brains are keys,
And with these keys we live.
Can we put the keys that have been damaged,
That have been broken
Back together again?
We can hope, we can wish,
We can try, we can trust,
But no matter what we must be aware
And we must care.
Keys to life.

I can relate to this, having had a stroke nearly 5 months ago and also because I was a behavior aide in a brain injury rehab facility 10 years ago. I was lucky, my stroke was not a mjor one and while I have lost some of my eyesight and have some weakness on the left side, it could have been so much worse. Having so much experience with brain injuries, I know how hard it can be for everyone involved. When growing up, one of my Uncle's had a serious stroke that left him paralyzed on one side. Many people are born with brain injuries, I had no idea that there were so many kinds and so many variables to contend with. jj

They now know that any blow to the head can possibly cause brain injury. Before they thought that wearing proper headgear was sufficient. However your brain is like jello while your skull is like cement. When jolted the jello has no place to go so it gets damaged. Even one concussion is cause for concern. Now those are ACQUIRED BRAIN INJURIES. As the above post mentions there are people born with brain injuries and strokes account for many.
The emotional consequences of concussions are much greater than previously thought. So are the emotional consequences of a stroke, even a little one, even when caught in time. Strokes lead to clinical depression and must be treated.
