The Day We Said Goodbye

It was a very cold winter day
Still I couldn’t tell you if it was sunny or gray
Such irrelevance was far in the back of my mind
It would’ve been dark even if the sun did shine

So often we're in the place we least want to see
But there’s nowhere else that we’d rather be
They said you were dying, a sin to keep you alive
Our hearts ripped to pieces deciding what was right

It turned out to be the day we said goodbye

A lifetime of living and striving, laughing and fun
Teaches not how to let go, mostly how to hold on
But when more suffering is to be the only road
You realize that parting is the only way to love

So I held your hand till your very last breath
It was an honor to be by your side
To see you off on your final journey
In a moment frozen in time

On the day we said goodbye.

Author's Note
I've written before about being one of the millions of people who lost loved ones to covid. But a book I just finished reading seems to have brought it all back. Maybe some things you just don't ever get over.
