That Look Men Have
All men have that look in their eyes
after a few too many drinks
the one that says they could take you
if they wanted to
The same look that would have had me
trading my sexuality for self-loathing
when I was still a silly little drunk
flirting with submission and meaningless ideology
A look that still leaves me stunned
in that pregnant moment, I’m potential road kill
caught up in the bright lights and danger
terrified and cowering at the drunken mercy…
Of those creatures I call men

i love that look because i feel i can laugh it off or challenge it, but this reeks of backstory and underlying fear. 'pregnant moment' - love that expression, but really, the whole thing is like biting into a steak, in both a vegetarian sense, and a ravenous carnivore sense. fabulous balance. (L4 - 'to') [:

Thanks Jesta. It's a look that means different things to different people. I get that it's thrilling while also being terrifying which I tried to convey here. I'm glad I was able to achieve that balance.
Your feedback is much appreciated. Again, thank you.

A very raw, self-examining work, Indie. It is a shame that alcohol deprives women of their normal decorum, or that they are so desperate for companionship - call it love if you like - that they will allow themselves to become the play things for man.
Every man, if they openly examine their deepest, darkest, thoughts have the capacity for sexual usury, violence and rape. There will be many who will now object in aghast denial but, sadly, it remains a fact. We are only held in check by the strength of moralistic principles, the concept that some things are 'wrong and unacceptable' in life. But, locked away in the darkest recesses, there will always remain the base animalism needs to reproduce - yes, we are designed for the process to pass on our genes. The pleasure comes as an added bonus. It is when the desire overrides the need, that unspeakable acts occur.
We remain only four percent evolved from "survival of the fittest".
My deepest apologies, sweet Miss Indie, your beautifully crafted write should not be accompanied by my madness rant.

Thanks for your comments Waggy, as far as rants go, I enjoy reading yours, you always have something intelligent to offer. And I agree that deep down, morality aside, we all have the capacity for unspeakable violence based on many factors.
It's also sad that women sell themselves out for an idea of love which isn't real, and that it is socially acceptable not only for men, but for women to look belittle other women and treat them like playthings.
Thanks again for your comments x)

While in my opinion, I consider men to be strange, and often times, complicated creatures, and it's unfortunate that they are blessed with the ability to make a woman feel both sexy and feared, and unfortunately some women tend to feed off of it. Is it animal magnetism or animal instinct that which remains the question as some women are attracted to sex and others are attracted to fear. I agree that men don't have to be intoxicated to give a woman a certain look for sobriety kills just the same. Women as playthings? Some women like to be exploited which is damaging to the ones who don't. All in all, Miss Indie, I loved your poem.

Thanks for your comment Devlin, I agree men are strange and often complicated creatures. Although I'm not physically attracted to men in anyway, I still find them fascinating. This poem was take on a moment that I was inspired to write about and it is biased to a certain perspective, which for some women is a reality, for others the thrill of that look is not terrifying at all.
