The Island that believed itself God

There was an island that believed itself a God,
standing alone amidst tempestuous gales.
Unbending. Unwavering. Unmoveable.
Time flowed over, around and through it.
Hardcore, heavy duty time.

Nothing ever altered, nothing changed there,
remaining resolutely in a single moment.
Solid. Stoical. Somnolent. Soulless.
A single blink of the universal eye.
Sedentary, sluggishly supine.

The island didn't understand emotional concepts,
it had existed bereft of outside contact.
Independent. Isolated. Individual.
Never experiencing love or loss.
Disinterested, callously detached.

The World that contained the island altered,
empires arose and fell, kingdoms won and lost.
Adapting. Adjusting. Accommodating.
Hominids to Neanderthal to Sapient.
Judgemental, accusatory Apes

The species bred, expanded and explored
all the forsaken, long-forgotten corners.
Inquiring. Investigating. Intrusive.
The island was recorded and mapped.
Naked, unprotected virgin.

It was raped, pillaged for the hidden treasures
that naturally existed without recognition.
Devastated. Dismantled. Disgraced
The ravishers, gratified, vacated again
The island understood loss and abuse.

Gladiatorial, militaristic forces exploited,
the perfect isolated location too rare to ignore.
Detonating. Discharged. Dynamic. Deadly.
Wiped clean of unique, endemic growth.
The island understood anger and hatred.

Ecological warriors monitored the condition
and re-established life, however alien.
Nursing. Nurturing, Nourishing.
Blossoming with renewed vitality.
The island understood love and care.

Plantations were cultivated, established in earnest,
to maximise the potential profitability.
Production. Proliferation. Prosperity.
Exotic fruits, rare and sought after.
The island understood giving and sharing.

Luxurious resorts followed on the coat-tails
of increasing awareness and accessibility.
Seductive. Sensual. Sexual. Salaciousness.
Relaxed inhibitions, couples mated ferociously.
The island understood lust and desire.

Endless permutations of lesser emotions,
swam unconfined, distillation into the bedrock.
Educating. Explaining. Enlightening.
A beat, a pulse, a rhythm began.
The island understood everything.

There was a man who believed himself island,
enforced solitary confinement pervaded.
Miserable. Melancholy. Mournful. Morose.
He experimented, learnt, and mastered.
Became whole, a complete entity.

The island would never forget becoming a man.
The man would never forget being an island.

The God looked on and laughed.
